USA Swimming National Team member BJ Johnson (Seattle, Wash.) will headline the 2013 Pacific Swimming Diversity Camp at the Martin Luther King Pool beginning at 8:30 a.m. PT on Saturday in San Francisco.
“I’m honored and excited to have the opportunity to give back to the swimming community and promote diversity within our sport,” Johnson said. “I believe that the more vibrant and diverse swimming becomes, the more we can learn from each other both as athletes and people.”
The all-day camp will feature several swimming sessions for campers age 11-16. There will be a dry-land circuit, technique videos and an educational talk. Johnson will lead one of the in-water workouts focusing on individual medley stroke and speed techniques. He will also speak about his swimming experience as a child before ending his appearance with a photograph and autograph session.
“I owe a lot of where I am today to a wide range of mentors who inspired me to continue swimming,” said Johnson. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to motivate the next generation of USA Swimming athletes.”
The goal of the diversity camp is to spread the mentality that elite level swimming can happen in any pool, by anyone who wants to make it happen.
The event will end at 5 p.m. PT and is open to the media.
Johnson’s appearance at the Pacific Swimming Diversity Camp is part of USA Swimming’s Athlete Partnership Program. The program is a platform for National Team swimmer to encourage kids and adults to take up the sport as a healthy and positive activity. These appearances directly promote the sport and the healthy lifestyle it represents. To find more information about how to get started in the sport, visit www.swimtoday.org
