ASU Splits A Pair of Home Dual Meets Against UCLA, Air Force

The Sun Devils hosted the UCLA Women’s and US Air Force Academy Men’s swimming and diving teams in dual meets at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Complex on Saturday, November 9. While the men emerged victorious, the women fell to their Pac-12 rivals.

In the women’s meet, the UCLA foursome of Linnea Mack, Jo Jo Winkler, Ting Quah, and Kathryn Murphy won the 200 medley relay with 1:43.25, a second ahead of Arizona State’s Ingibjorg Jonsdottir, Alex Popa, Marina Spadoni, and Melanie Busch.

Tristin Baxter of ASU won the first of her two distance events with a 9:59.17 finish in the 1000. UCLA’s Lauren Baker (10:01.23) was second; the Sun Devils’ Anna Olasz (10:17.51) was third.

UCLA women took first and third in the 200 free with Quah (1:49.38) and Ally Loper (1:50.96). Arizona State’s Kat Simonovic was second with 1:49.95.

In the 100 back it was UCLA’s Madison White who was first to the wall in 55.07. The Sun Devils’ Busch touched second in 55.49, just ahead of the Bruins’ Katie Kinnear (55.76).

ASU’s Popa won the 100 breast with a strong second half. Her 1:04.02 beat UCLA’s Ashley Tse by over a half a second. Sun Devil teammate Tory Houston touched third in 1:05.60.

Noelle Tarazona (2:00.32) and Anna Senko (2:01.36) went 1-2 for the Bruins in the 200 fly. Despite a strong second 100 Arizona State’s Baxter couldn’t quite catch them and finished with 2:02.90.

UCLA freshman Mack took the 50 free in 23.20. Just trailing were two Sun Devils: Busch (23.44) and Jonsdottir (24.05).

In the 3-meter dive ASU took the first two spots with Hailey Casper and Morgan Weller. UCLA’s Paulina Guzman was third.

UCLA picked up points on a sweep of the 100 free. Quah and Murphy went 1-2 in 50.59 and 51.19, respectively; Monica Dornick tied for third with ASU’s Simonovic, as they both touched in 51.61.

For the second time in as many events UCLA took the first three spots, this time in the 200 back. White (1:59.25), Kinnear (2:00.78), and Jesse Bergman (2:01.59) tallied up another 16 points for the Bruins.

The 200 breast featured a tie for first between Tse of UCLA and Houston of ASU. They each went 2:18.09, more than four seconds ahead of third-place finisher Jessica Khojasteh of UCLA.

The 500 allowed ASU’s Baxter to complete her sweep of the distance frees. She touched in 4:52.19, ahead of a pair of Bruins, Baker (4:56.12) and Ally Loper (4:57.98).

Kinnear, Mack and Senko gave UCLA another 1-2-3 sweep with strong swims in the 100 fly. They went 54.58, 56.13, and 56.19. Immediately thereafter Bruins Tarazona (4:22.23), Baker (4:25.51) and Tse (4:28.62) were the top three finishers in the 400 IM.

ASU took 1-2 in the 3-meter dive as Weller and Casper reversed their positions and finished first and second, respectively. Annika Lenz of UCLA was third.

UCLA women ended the meet with a victory in the 400 free relay, as Quah, Murphy, Senko and Bergman touched in 3:25.93.

Final score: UCLA 183 – ASU 113

 

On the men’s side the score was much closer. ASU began the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Richard Bohus, Thibaut Capitaine, Alex Coci and Barkley Perry came in at 1:31.32, more than a second in front of the Falcons’ Devon Davis, Michael Barnosky, Kevin Mitchell and Jordan Dahle.

Air Force came back and swept the top three spots in the 1000 with Kevin Jackson (9:36.28), Andre Faciszewski (9:38.59) and Alex Strom (9:41.84).

The Sun Devils produce a first and a third in the 200 free: Perry (1:41.20) and Sean Kao (1:42.73). Finishing second was Falcon Robby Graves (1:42.31).

David Adalsteinsson of Arizona State won the 100 back in 49.98, a mere .01 ahead of his teammate Bohus. Davis of Air Force (51.27) was third.

Air Force took first (Barnosky, 55.93) and third (Zach Knoche, 58.64) in the 100 breast; the Sun Devils’ Capitaine took silver in 56.44.

ASU’s Zac Dalby (1:50.40) took the 200 fly away from a pair of Falcons: Sean Ledford (1:52.40) and Kevin Pollard (1:56.35).

Ryan Dunne of Air Force was the 50 free winner with 20.69. He was followed by Bohus of ASU in 20.99 and Falcon teammate Angus Macdonald in 21.23.

In 1-meter diving Riley McCormick of ASU came out on top by a large margin. Next up was Air Force’s Nathaniel Zillweger, then ASU’s Hunter Atha.

Air Force Falcon Ryan Dunne swam a 45.58 to win the 100 free. In his wake were Coci (45.69) and Adalsteinsson (46.40) of ASU.

The Sun Devils’ Perry took the 200 back in 1:49.51, nearly two seconds faster than second-place Kris Tiller.

The 200 breast featured Capitaine of Arizona State (2:04.41), followed by Barnowsky of Air Force (2:05.20) and Brandon Mills (2:08.82) of ASU.

Air Force’s Jackson won his second distance event with the 500 free. His 4:38.19 was just in front of ASU’s Alex Palumbo (4:39.98) who was himself just in front of Air Force’s Strom (4:41.27).

The 100 fly was Coci (ASU, 48.79), Mitchell (AF 50.43) and Davis (AF, 50.71).

The 200 IM gave ASU’s Dalby (1:54.61) his second win of the day. Paul Leonhardt of Air Force was second and Kyle Sockwell of Arizona State was third.

The penultimate event of the contest went to the 400 free relay team of Perry, Coci, Adalsteinsson, and Bohus. Their 1:22.77 was just good enough to take first away from Air Force’s Frank, Dunne, Macdonald, and Micah Newmann.

ASU’s McCormick and Atha took the top two spots in the 3-meter dive, while Air Force’s Zillweger was third.

Final score: ASU 158 – Air Force 142
