2024 Sydney Open Brings Inaugural Cam McEvoy Sprint Challenge Event

2024 SYDNEY OPEN & UNISPORT NATIONALS

  • Thursday, May 9th – Saturday, May 11th
  • Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre
  • LCM (50m)
  • Meet Central

The annual Sydney Open & Unisport Nationals competition is on the calendar for the month of May, however, this year’s edition has a special new addition.

The inaugural ‘Cam McEvoy Sprint Challenge’ has been included on the final day of the non-selection competition, offering a unique challenge for the meet’s participants.

The unique event is named after 2023 World Championships gold medalist Cameron McEvoyIn Fukuoka last year, McEvoy clocked a time of 21.06 to become the 4th-fastest man ever in the event. He settled for silver at this year’s edition in Doha, hitting 21.45 behind winner Vladyslav Bukhov of Ukraine who touched in 21.44.

For the ‘Cam McEvoy Sprint Challenge’ this May, the top 12 finishers from the men’s and women’s individual 50m free event will be invited to take on 3 x 25 freestyle lengths from a dive, taking place every 10 minutes.

In each round, 2 swimmers will be eliminated from the field, akin to rapid-fire rounds of skins.

However, the final winner is not determined by just his/her final 25 time but rather by the fastest cumulative time over the 3 rounds.

The start list has not yet been published but the 2023 edition of the competition saw the likes of Kaylee McKeown, Meg Harris, and Bronte Campbell dive in to race.

We’ll see if South Aussie Kyle Chalmers possibly makes the trip, potentially giving us his racing debut after switching coaches from Peter Bishop to Ash Delaney due to Bishop’s suspension.

So isn’t Kyle Chalmers considered a Queenslander now since he’s training in QLD? Like the rest of them who have all moved north , the list is endless

yep, and qld will take all the credit for his olympic results. queensland sport boasted about the “all queensland” w4x100 free in tokyo, despite wilson and mckeon being queenslanders under conflicting definitions

Sounds like the waste of time events that Michael Andrew lives for

Not too fond of these Mickey-Mouse events.

Certainly can’t see it being anywhere but at the bottom of Kyle’s ‘to do list’.

the only other day 3 events that kyle could swim are the 200 free and 50 fly. the skins is a better fit than the 50 fly, since it is part freestyle and start practice can’t hurt. and he could go all out in the 200 free heat then scratch the final

Why aren’t 25s an event? Track gets the 100m?

The swimming start is way more overpowered than the track start

It would be cool to do them LC with an overhead camera timing to when the head crosses 25

The analog really isn’t that simple, the impact of pounding on the ground really takes a toll on the body, running just isn’t the same.

Dressel would devestate anyone on 3×25. He wouldn’t need 10 minutes rest either.

I reckon there’d be some who could stay with him. Didn’t ISL do this?

At the very moment? I bet Crooks and Liendo could hang with him.

Hang with him over one race, maybe. Not over three.

Dressel was created for skins. He’s an explosive sprinter but due to UF training he also has impressive endurance and recovers quickly unlike all the bulky pure sprinters who don’t actually swim at practice. Most sprinters train to go fast once, but Dressel could hit their top speed repeatedly with far less rest.

He lost in breaststroke skins

Who would have thought that someone who no longer primarily trains Breaststroke would lose

He’d have lost regardless of how much he trained breaststroke.
