While not an Olympic-qualifying competition, the 2024 Sydney Open & Unisport Nationals competition is an important stepping stone between last month’s Australian National Championships and next month’s Paris 2024 Trials.
A host of significant talent is set to descend upon the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre over the course of the 4-day meet, giving us a glimpse into athletes’ preparation for the main event taking place just over a month from now.
The Campbell sisters and fellow speedsters Emma McKeon, Kaylee McKeown and Mollie O’Callaghan will not be traveling to New South Wales. However, former world record holder and Olympic medalist Zac Stubblety-Cook is indeed entered, as is 2023 world champion Cam McEvoy.

in other news, shannon rollason heard that either age or open nationals will be on the gold coast every 2nd year. swimming australia supposedly wants to make the gold coast “the hub of swimming”. several elite aus coaches knew where the 2024 trials and OW nationals would be, well before the hosts were officially revealed. so unfortunately, this rumour has some credit
Surely that would be ‘AND’ not ‘OR’ to reduce officials/broadcasters/etc having to travel to 2 different cities.

Short answer is “heaps”. I have always felt these kickbacks should be disclosed as freedom of information. I am just against shady boardroom deals that open up so much corruption at the highest level. If it’s transparent it can’t be perceived as anything other than what it is.
The amounts offered to Swimming Australia to host these championships should be available to assist athletes that have to travel across the country to participate. Sadly this is not the reality though, poor old Mum’s and Dad’s emptying their pockets whilst Swimming Australia stuffing them full.

But how do you know that for sure ? Their squad members have attended in the past I’m sure .. do you have inside knowledge to know for sure or just surmising like everyone else here
The last time SPW sent a single swimmer to the Sydney Open was 2021. So I think it’s fairly safe to assume it was never part of their program.
Unless they decided after three years they were going to send people for the first time again and then decided to cancel that for a training session. Which seems pretty unlikely.
Well you do know 2021 was when the last Olympic trials were held right ?
SPW haven’t sent a group to this meet all the way back to 2019 and I don’t even see the one athlete Sub13 is talking about for 2021.
Sorry you’re right. SPW had 9 on the entry list for 2021 but all withdrew and no one attended.
So yeah, I can’t actually find any evidence that SPW has ever sent a swimmer lol.
But someone’s getting really upset that their attempt to criticise SPW is not supported by reality.

Why do you care? Swimmers choosing to swim even if they’re past their best impacts you in no way.
Some people swim just because they actually love swimming as a sport
