Michael Andrew Drops 200 IM From 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials Schedule

2024 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS

The 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials are slated to commence tomorrow, Saturday, June 15th. On the eve of the competition, Michael Andrew has opted to drop the 200 IM from his Olympic Trials line-up. Andrew’s father and coach, Peter Andrew, confirmed the news on social media.

Andrew won the 200 IM at the previous Olympic Trials back in 2020(1), where he scorched a time of 1:55.26 to become the third-fastest American in history (at the time, as Shaine Casas popped a 1:55.24 in 2022 to overtake him for that slot). Andrew went on the place 5th in the Olympic final with a time of 1:57.31. Since then, Andrew has shifted focus to strictly sprints, and the 50 free is a direct conflict with the 200 IM at these 2024 Trials.

All-Time Fastest U.S. Performers In Men’s 200 Meter IM:

  1. Ryan Lochte – 1:54.00 (2011)
  2. Michael Phelps – 1:54.16 (2011)
  3. Shaine Casas — 1:55.24 (2022)
  4. Michael Andrew – 1:55.26 (2021)
  5. Eric Shanteau – 1:55.36 (2009)

Andrew is still planning on racing his three other entries, the 100m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, and 100m butterfly. His highest seed comes in the 50 free, where his entry time of 21.64 situates him 3rd on the psych sheet. He holds the American record in the 100m breast with the 58.14 scorcher that he threw down at the 2020(1) Olympic Trials.

Michael Andrew‘s Remaining Entries For 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials:

  • 100m Breaststroke (June 15 heat + potential semifinal, June 16 potential final) — 5th seed, 59.52
  • 50m Freestyle (June 20 heat + potential semifinal, June 21 potential final) — 3rd seed, 21.64
  • 100m Butterfly (June 21 heat + potential semifinal, June 22 potential final) — 9th seed — 51.66

How mad are people going to be when he makes the Olympic team again?

He just missed his only chance. But hey, training for the 25 free seems like a lot of fun

As a coach, I’m sceptical of the training methods as well…
But I wonder why we think it was such wasted potential with him. First of all, he’s got a ton of prestigious medals for only being 25 (in fact, he’s won every gold medal that can be won out of the big ones… Olympic gold, WC LC and SC gold, Pan PAC gold). Secondly, we don’t know whether he’d have been even more successful if he’d trained differently. That’s just blind speculation.
Thirdly, maybe his understanding of success isn’t just the medal count… Maybe it’s winning medals PLUS daring to be different and maintaining a balance that makes him happy.
And lastly, even in the mediocre… Read more »

I personally would have loved to see him in the IM but did anyone notice how all 3 of his remaining events fell on the SAME night basically back to back? It would have been a Phelps-like night. It’s like “they” planned it that way just to mess w/him eh? But when he writes his book. . books will be sold

MAs mom & dad prob wrote the above comment. sounds just like ’em to say the swimming world is out to get poor MA. they think MA is so great the only reason hes not wining every race is cause the trials committee conspired against MA. he went into 100 breast fully rested and still didn’t make the team. dont blame anyone else for that MA fam! the Andrews are consipiracy theorists esp when things dont go their way or their son doesnt make the cut cause he was beaten by swimmers that train by as the Andrews say ‘doing garbage mileage.’ folks wonder why MA and his fam get a bad rap. its cause they say things like the… Read more »

Why did bro even enter in the 200IM, it was clear that he wasn’t gonna swim it.

MA is the wasted talent of this generation, his dad is to blame, arrogance in following an untested method absolutely, he will not be going to Paris.

He has hardly swam this since Tokyo so no surprise. He is really putting his eggs in two baskets. One this weekend (100 Breast which is his best chance) and next weekend (50 free).

He’s every bit a threat in the 1 fly as the other two events. He would have made the team in the 100 fly last Trials but Durden asked him to scratch the event so he could get Tom Shields a shot at the team. He was the #2 seed behind Dressel heading into finals before scratching.

The difference is that was three years ago. He’s not the same swimmer at all and I’d be shocked if he made it past the semi finals in the fly.

A 51.9 wont make it to the olympics. And that is as fast as he will go.

4 yrs ago when he was fit to swim a 1.55 200im. Now he trains for the 25 free so he is not fit for anything.
