Michigan girls wrap up high school state with two all-time state records

The Michigan High School Athletic Association wrapped up its girls state meets this weekend, with the state’s biggest schools, classified in Division 1, competing at Oakland University, Division 2 racing at Eastern Michigan University, and Division 3 swimming at the Holland Aquatic Center.

Division 1

Farmington Hills won its second state title in three years, breaking a Division 1 record in the 200 free relay to top Saline by 20 points. Ann Arbor Skyline was third with two relay wins.

Two all-time state records fell, both of them to Waterford juniors. Maddie Wright won the 100 fly, going 53.88 to break her own Division 1 record and add the Michigan all-time record as well. Miranda Tucker won the 100 breaststroke, going 1:01.36 in the prelims to break Division 1 and all-time records, as well as the Oakland pool record. She went 1:02.06 at finals to take the state championship.

Both Wright and Tucker were double event winners. Wright also won the 200 free in 1:46.25, while Tucker took the 200 IM, breaking a Division 1 record while going 2:00.31.

Farmington Hills’ only individual win was from junior Roxanne Griffore in the 50 free. She was 23.57. She also led off a 200 free relay that won and broke a Division 1 record. The team of Griffore, Maddy Loniewski, Alaina Skellett and Kathleen McGee went 1:35.31.

Two more individual Division 1 records fell on the day: Ann Arbor Skyline sophomore Katie Portz went 50.23 in prelims to break the 100 free record. She went 50.45 at finals, but still picked up the win. Chanel Bonin of South Lyon held onto the top seed in the 100 back, winning in 54.16 to break the Division 1 record.

Other event winners were Saline freshman Amy Stevens in diving, scoring 462.70 and Northville freshman Laura Westphal in the 500 free, clocking in at 4:57.84.

Ann Arbor Skyline won the first and last relays. The team of Emma Cleason, Shannon Cowley, Kate Orringer and Katie Portz went 1:44.45 with Portz running down Farmington Hills for a narrow win and a Division 1 relay record. Skyline’s team of Cleason, Kaelan Oldani, Cowley and Portz w0n the 400 free relay to close the meet, going 3:27.52.

Division 2

Holland High School took two relays and got four wins from junior Taylor Garcia en route to its third straight Division 2 state title.

Garcia broke a Division 2 record in winning the 100 fly – she went 54.01 to break her own record from two seasons ago. She also won the 100 back, breaking 53 for the first time to go 52.95.

Holland’s 200 medley relay of Garcia, Anna Giesler, Abi Johns and Clara Steeby went 1:46.24 to open the meet with a win. The team of Holly Morren, Cassie Misiewicz, Emily Johns and Garcia won the 400 free relay in 3:27.79 to close the day.

Morren, a senior, went 23.59 to pick up the win in the 50 free for Holland.

Bloomington’s Hills’ junior Mollie Pulte was another dual-event winner and Division record-breaker on the day. She won the 200 free, breaking the Division 2 record in prelims, going 1:47.90. She went 1:48.37 at finals to seal the win. Pulte also won the 100 free, going 49.87 to break another Division 2 record at finals.

Pulte also led Bloomington Hills to a Division 2 record in the 200 free relay. The team of Maren Taylor, Hannah Richard, Sophia Schott and Pulte went 1:35.24, thanks to a big 22.6 anchor leg from Pulte. They missed the state record by four tenths at prelims but finished the job in the finals session.

Portage Central junior Madison Umberger won the 200 IM, taking the lead on a huge backstroke leg and going 2:03.79. In diving, Fraser senior Alli Shereda emerged with a state championship, scoring 412.10. Bay City Western’s Krissy Harmon won the 500 free by a mere .04 – she went 4:59.42 to touch out Holland’s Cassie Misiewicz. and Battle Creek Lakeview senior Brooke Rowe won the 100 breast in 1:04.53.

Division 3

East Grand Rapids set new Division 3 records in both free relays to ice its overall team win, also getting a 500 free championship from sophomore Emily Converse.

The 200 free relay of Lexus VanHoven, Hanna Sanford, Converse (coming directly off her 500 free win), and Gabby Higgins went 1:36.05 to break their own record set at prelims. Then in the 400 free relay, VanHoven, Emily Lundquist, Converse and Higgins went 3:30.35 also breaking their own record.

Converse went 5:02.57 in her 500 free win.

Hamilton High School’s Stephanie Johnston swept the sprint events, going 23.81 in the 50 free and 52.08 in the 100.

Holland Christian senior Ashlee Sall was the 200 free winner, going 1:52.80, while freshman Riley Kishman of Grand Rapids Catholic Central won the 200 IM in 2:06.98. Milan’s Taylor Kosein won diving with a score of 425.60 and in the next event Adrian High School senior Jennifer Wagley went 57.82 to win the 100 fly. Other event winners were Hannah Kopydlowski in the 100 back (57.08) and Natalie Pierce in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.62).
