At the 2021 Olympic Trials, Carson Foster finished 3rd in the 400 IM, getting passed on the last lap of the race to nearly miss a spot in Tokyo. Last night in Indianapolis, Foster got redemption, handily winning the event and qualifying for his first Olympic team.
Why didn’t he love swimming? His time in 2021 was the fastest in the world.
Just because you swim fast does not mean you love swimming.
Kids please learn to love swimming no matter the outcome
Couldn’t be more true. I didn’t find that until I got back into swimming with a masters team after 9 years out of the water. Didn’t realize that it’s actually possible to love practice just as much, if not more, than competing. Never had a healthier relationship with the water as a result.
I fell in love with swimming again through masters simply because there wasn’t anything at stake. I essentially used my first summer back swimming almost like a therapy re-parenting exercise: I didn’t have to race the person next to me, I didn’t have to feel guilty if I felt like going through the motions vs. pushing myself, and I could come and go as I pleased. But I also had an extremely manipulative age group coach who inevitably caused me to tie 100% of my self-worth to how I performed at meets.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
