A second world record was broken in the Lucas Oil Stadium. The youngest male swimmer since 2000 made the team. American rankings were climbed. There were a lot of headlines after tonight, but that’s not why you’re here. Let’s recap some swims that flew under the radar on day 4.
University of Louisville’s Tommy Bried had a big double this morning, taking on both the 200 fly and the 200 breast. In heat 1 of the 200 fly, Bried dropped nearly three seconds from his seed time, clocking his first personal best since 2022 (1:57.60). Then, three hours and 55 minutes later (thanks to the women’s 1500 free), Bried was back in the water for 200 breast. He achieved an even bigger drop, shedding 3.51-seconds to break 2:15, 2:14, 2:13, and 2:12 for the first time in his career (2:11.96).
Both of those performances earned second swims. Bried rose from 52nd in the 200 fly and 55th in the 200 breast. Even though the turnaround was only an hour at night, Bried took on the double again. First up was the 200 fly, where he shaved one-hundredth of a second off his prelims PB to finish 10th overall (1:57.59). In the 200 breast, he added about a second and a half for 16th, but it was still an impressive effort to take on two of the most grueling 200s twice in one day. And the double was reminiscent of another swimmer we might see in Paris…

Ohio State-commit Mila Nikanorov is having herself a meet. After dropping almost four seconds from seed in the 400 free on the first day, she was another heat 1 hero in the 1500, dropping over 17 seconds from her best time set this January. In that swim, done at the Knoxville Pro Swim Series, Nikanorov was 33-high for most of her splits, slipping up into 34 a few times.
This morning, she was never slower that 33.62. Nikanorov looked Ledecky-esque when she hit the wall in 16:27.05, improving her #36 seed all the way up to 10th. She still has the 800 free left on her schedule and looks primed for another big drop there.
NC State freshman Quintin McCarty blazed a new personal best in the 100 free from heat 2. Until this morning, his best time stood at 49.81 from 2022. He had approached that time a few times since, and was entered at 49.86.
McCarty jumped out to an early lead of the field and didn’t look back, hitting the final wall in 48.95 to post the first sub-50 swim of the morning, and lowered his best time by almost a second. The athletes and coaches section erupted with cheers when he did, and that is why we do this.
Tommy Breid has Guts, he is strong and courageous. Representing Louisville 💦 in extraordinary swims. Go Cardinals fly high over the water in Indy.
Tommy is a beast! Great swims!
Didn’t miss any of these swims but so great to see them highlighted – congrats to all who are there
Rylee Erisman PB’ed again. 54.22. Recently turned 15.
Already got its own mention elsewhere.
