Day 2 Highlights
Day 2 of the 2024 BRICS Games unfolded last night with the sport of swimming representing one of 27 being contested by more than 4700 athletes in Kazan, Russia.
BRICS is an intergovernmental organization comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. The Games are an annual multi-sport competition held in 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
Russia’s Miron Lifincev doubled up on his 200m back victory from last night with another gold medal-worthy performance in tonight’s 50m back.
The 18-year-old touched in 24.75 for the decisive victory, hitting the sole time of the field under 25 secondds.
Behind him was countryman Ivan Tarasov who secured silver in 25.30 while Belarusian Viktar Staselovich rounded out the podium in 25.53.
Livincev now ranks 17th in the world on the season in the men’s 50m back.
Russia’s Sofya Dyakova also clinched her second victory of these Games, following up her 400m free gold from night one with a win in the 200m free.
Dyakova posted one of only two sub-2:00 times of the field, registering 1:58.73 to get to the wall first. Over a second behind was Brazil’s Nathalia Almeida who scored 1:59.96 while Russian Anastasiya Saratova bagged bronze in 2:00.82.
Ilya Shymanovich of Belarus topped the men’s 50m breast podium to pair the gold with his 100m win from night one. This evening the 29-year-old punched an effort of 27.18 to get the advantage over Brazil’s Joao Gomes Junior who notched 27.48 as the runner-up.
Russia’s Egor Bakhur also landed on the podium in 27.83, good enough for bronze.
Shymanovich rocked a mark of 26.66 in the heats at this year’s World Championships before adding time and ultimately finishing 10th in 27.07 there in Doha.
Finally, Belarusian Alina Zmushka produced the fastest mark in the 100m breast, registering 1:06.86 to handily defeat the field.
Ralina Gilyazova of Russia was next to the wall in 1:08.90 and Zmushka’s teammate Anna Piatrutskaya finished in 1:09.70 for bronze.
In Doha, Zmushka put up a time of 1:06.58 to finish 6th in the event, although she represented neutrality as Russia and Belarus were not allowed to formally participate flying their nations’ flags at the meet.
Additional Notes:
- Brazil’s Thiago Ruffini topped the men’s 1500m freestyle podium, producing a result of 15:16.68. That was just a hair off the lifetime best of 15:16.26 logged last month at Brazilian Nationals.
- Anastasiya Shkurdai produced a winning effort of 1:00.57 to take the women’s 100m back by well over a second. The 21-year-old has been as quick as 59.08 in her career, a result posted at the 2020 Belarusian Junior Championships.
