Goodburn Wins 50 Breast Scottish Title Days After Revealing Brain Tumor Diagnosis (Video)

2024 SCOTTISH NATIONAL OPEN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Just days after revealing his heartbreaking diagnosis of having inoperable brain tumors, 23-year-old Archie Goodburn of Great Britain raced on the last day at the 2024 Scottish Open Swimming Championships.

Taking on his signature 50m breast event, Goodburn stopped the clock at 28.13 to take the national title. That was nearly equal to the 28.16 he logged in the heats to establish himself as the top seed.

The Edinburgh swimmer owns a lifetime best of 27.19 in this event, a time he registered to become the 2023 British champion and the 3rd-fastest Brit ever.

Speaking to Scottish Swimming after the final, Goodburn stated, “I’m here to just enjoy myself.

“Addressing the elephant in the room, about six weeks post-surgery, so to get in the pool and perform a pretty consistent race twice over, not too bad and so I’m happy with that today.

“A lot of mistakes but my head’s in a busy place at the moment so we’ll take it.

“I mean you talk about teammates and friends but I think we describe it as a family and it really has been. I’ve been completely overwhelmed by support messages. It’s been brilliant, so thanks to everyone.”
