Mid-Distance Freestyle Specialist Taylor Tomey to swim for Univeristy of Utah (2024)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Taylor Tomey of Phoenix Swim Club has signed to swim with the University of Utah starting this fall, becoming the first from her family to swim collegiately. Tomey is from Scottsdale, Arizona, and recently graduated from Horizon High School.

Tomey has helped Horizon to two consecutive runner-up finishes at the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division 1 State Championships. In November 2023, her senior year, she placed 2nd in the 200 free (1:52.22) and 3rd in the 500 free (5:03.64) to score 33 of Horizon’s 259.5 points.

A few months later, at the 2024 Arizona State Senior Championships in March, Tomey set three lifetime bests in the 100 free (51.71), 1000 free (10:23.29) and 200 IM (2:05.55) to place 7th, 5th, and 9th, respectively.

Most recently, at the Speedo Sectionals meet in Mt. Hood, Oregon last weekend, Tomey swam to 5 new personal bests across her primary events. She posted a 58.99 in her 100 free, 2:06.80 in her 200 free, 4:28.56 in her 400 free, 9:25.72 in her 800 free, and 2:27.14 in her 200 IM. Tomey additionally contributed relay splits of 27.24 in the 4×50 free relay, 58.63 in the 4×100 free relay, and lead of the 4×200 free relay in a new PB of 2:06.74 to help Phoenix Swim Club win the event.

Best Times:

  • 100 free – 51.71
  • 200 free – 1:51.59
  • 500 free – 4:59.53
  • 1000 free – 10:23.29
  • 200 IM – 2:05.55

The University of Utah, which was once in the PAC-12, will join the BIG 12 conference starting this fall, aligning with Tomey’s arrival on campus. At the latest (and last) edition of the PAC-12 Championships, Utah finished 6th out of 8 teams, their highest finish under Jonas Persson. Persson, who will be entering his 3rd year as Utah’s men’s and women’s head coach, took over in May 2022.

Tomey’s personal bests are just off what it took to score at the 2024 Big 12 Championships, as times of 51.23/1:50.78/4:58.87 in the 100/200/500 free earned a night swim. Utah’s top 3 scorers were divers Emilia Garip, Holly Waxman, and Kathryn Grant. Summer Stanfield, Utah’s highest scoring swimmer, was a graduate student last season and will not return this fall.

Joining Tomey in Utah’s class of 2028 will be Hungary’s Eniko Onofer, Utah natives Lauren Greenwell and Anya Clark, Californians Alexia Duncan and Hayley Smith, fellow Arizonan Haley Mueller, and Bridget Sortor, who hails from Oregon. Both Sortor and Smith specialize in the same events as Tomey, and will look to join her in Utah’s middle-distance training group.
