WASHINGTON – Georgetown University’s Swimming & Diving teams have brought on 14 freshmen, one transfer and two graduate transfers to complete the incoming class of 2024. The men will welcome nine newcomers while the women add eight. The group of 17 spans 10 states across the country.
“This class gives us a ton of depth and they all fit in so well with the team during the recruiting process. We’re excited to add them officially this fall and to see how they contribute in and out of the pool.” – Head Coach Jack Leavitt.
Ben Tunila | Manhattan Beach, Calif. | Mira Costa High School \ Villanova University – Men’s Swimming
- Swam for Villanova during his freshman year.
- Finished third in the 400 IM (3:52.30) at the 2024 BIG EAST championship and earned an All-BIG EAST honor.
- Captained his sophomore, junior and senior seasons at Mira Costa High School.
- Named team MVP in 2022 and 2023.
- Four year Academic All-American in high school.
- Three-time Bay League Champions (2023, 2022, 2023).
- Set a new record while becoming the Bay League Champion in the 200 IM.
- In addition to swimming, Tunila was a captain and starter on Mira Costa’s Water Polo team.
- Tunila joins his brother Wilson Tunila and cousin Jack Brearton on the Georgetown men’s swimming team.
Tyler Knightly | Dedham, Mass. | Thayer Academy \ Amherst – Men’s Swimming
- Swam at Amherst from 2020-24.
- Named team MVP in 2023 and 2024.
- At Thayer Academy, Knightly set seven team records and broke the NEPSAC record in the 500 freestyle.
- Named team captain as a senior.
- Swam for club team Crimson Aquatics in high school.
- Junior Nationals Qualifier as a sophomore, junior and senior.
Ryan Mathis | McLean, Virginia | Georgetown Preparatory School \ Boston College – Men’s Swimming
- Swam at Boston College from 2020-24.
- In high school, Mathis swam for Nation’s Capital Swim Club.
- Metros and National Catholics Meet record holder in 200 Medley Relay.
- Achieved High School Automatic All-American time in two events.
- Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention 2 times.
- Team captain senior year.
- All-IAC all four years.
Brendan Hodgens | Wayne, Pa. | Germantown Academy – Men’s Diving
- Named captain as a senior.
