Shareef Elaydi Blasts 2:01.94 200 IM to Become 3rd-Fastest 15-Year-Old American Ever

2024 SPEEDO SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS

Shareef Elaydi won the B-final of the men’s 200 IM at the Speedo Summer Championships on Saturday night, clocking a personal-best 2:01.94 that makes him the third-fastest 15-year-old American ever in the event. Only Tim Connery (2:01.92) and Maximus Williamson (1:59.01) have been quicker than Elaydi at age 15.

The Santa Clara Swim Club standout knocked almost two seconds off his previous-best 2:03.73 from March, which is the U.S. boys 13-14 national age group (NAG) record. He split 26.72 on butterfly, 31.69 on backstroke, 34.70 on breaststroke, and 28.83 on freestyle.

Elaydi now ranks 11th in the 15-16 NAG rankings after only recently turning 15 last month. He won the CIF state title in the yards version of this event a couple months ago as a freshman.

Other swims you might have missed from Irvine on Saturday included West Coast Aquatics 14-year-old Syunta Lee placing 8th in the men’s 200 IM B-final with a time of 2:05.55, which shaved a few tenths off his previous-best 2:05.98 from last week. He remains 4th in the 13-14 NAG rankings behind Baylor Stanton (2:05.15), Michael Andrew (2:04.13), and Elaydi (2:03.73).

Sooner Swim Club 16-year-old JD Thumann barely missed qualifying for the 50 free A-final tonight with a time of 23.21 in prelims, but he made up for it by blasting a personal-best 22.82 to win the 50 free B-final. He dropped a few tenths off his previous-best 23.13 from March, moving up to 13th in the 15-16 NAG rankings.

Tsunami Swim Team of KC 16-year-old Whitaker Steward placed 9th in the men’s 800 free (8:08.43), dropping more than four seconds off his previous-best 8:12.61 from March. He now ranks 43rd in the 15-16 NAG rankings.

Orange Regional Competitive Aquatics 15-year-old Chloe Teger touched 6th in women’s 1500 free with a time of 16:45.79. She dropped more than six seconds off her previous-best 16:52.41 from earlier this month, becoming the 56th-fastest 15-year-old American in the history of the event.
