One lane over from Caeleb Dressel’s barrier-breaking 17-18 National Age Group record, Ryan Hoffer was creating some history of his own at the 2013 Junior National Championships. The 15-year-old Arizona swimmer led off the Scottsdale Aquatic Club relay in 19.54, the fastest time ever for a 15-16 year old boy.
Hoffer set the previous NAG record back in early November at the Arizona High School State Championships, going 19.55, which at the time smashed Dressel’s old record of 19.82 from 2012. Tonight, Hoffer was able to better that mark by another hundredth of a second.
What shouldn’t be forgotten is that Hoffer is on the extreme young end of his age bracket. He just turned 15 this past summer, meaning he’s still got another year and a half to lower that mark even further. After that, he’ll have two more years to try to join Dressel as the only 18-and-under boys in history to break the awe-inspiring 19 second mark in the splash and dash.
