Day two of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games saw the semi-finals of the women’s 100m breaststroke unfold at La Défense Arena.
South African silver medalist in this event from Tokyo Tatjana Smith (nee Schoenmaker) clocked a time of 1:05.00 to lead the pack.
Just over half a second behind her was Mona McSharry of Ireland, who notched a new national record of 1:05.51 en route to snagging the 2nd seed for tomorrow night’s final.
23-year-old McSharry’s outing tonight sliced .04 off her previous career-quickest mark of 1:05.55 notched at last year’s World Championships. That former performance rendered the Tennessee swimmer Ireland’s first woman to ever dip under the 1:06 threshold in the 100m breast.

The last time Ireland won an Olympic pool swimming medal was when Michelle Smith racked up an impressive 4-medal haul in Atlanta. At those 1996 Games, Smith earned gold in the 400m free, 200m IM, 400m IM and bronze in the 200m fly event.
