Day 8 Prelims Event Lineup

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom enters as the top seed in the 50 freestyle with a 23.61. She is the World Record holder in the event and will be in search of another Olympic gold this week after already winning the 100 free. Kasia Wasick of Poland enters as the #2 seed with a 23.65 and won silver at 2022 Worlds and bronze at 2023 Worlds. She be in search of her first Olympic medal while in her 5th Olympics.

The final sub-24 second seed is Shayna Jack of Australia who enters with a 23.99. Jack won silver at 2023 Worlds in the event. Gretchen Walsh of the US is the #4 seed with a 24.06 while Simone Manuel is the #5 seed with a 24.13. Manuel won silver in Rio in the event.

Bobby Finke of the US is the top seed in the men’s 1500 free with a 14:31.59 and is the American Record holder and defending Olympic Champion in the event. He won silver in the event at both 2022 and 2023 Worlds. This week, Finke won silver in the 800 free already.

Winning the 800 free this week was Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen who became the first Irish man to ever medal in swimming. Wiffen enters as the #2 seed with a 14:34.07 and will look to add to his medal table. He won the event in February at 2024 Worlds.

The rest of the podium from Tokyo will also be in the event with Mykhailo Romanchuk of Ukraine entered as the #6 seed with a 14:40.21. He won silver in Tokyo. Tokyo bronze medalist Florian Wellbrock of Germany is the #4 seed with a 14:34.89.

The men’s 4×100 medley relay has the US and China entering as the top two seeds. So far this week, Italy the #7 seed, is home to Olympic Champions in the men’s 100 back and 100 breast. The 100 fly final is scheduled for tonight. China is home to the Olympic Champion in the 100 freestyle as Pan Zhanle swam a World Record 46.40.

The women’s 4×100 medley relay closes the morning. The US holds the top seed and is home to 100 butterfly champion from this week Torri Huske. Huske also won silver in the 100 free. Australia is the #2 seed and is home to 100 backstroke champion Kaylee McKeown.

Wellbrock and Romanchuk out. That’s gotta be a significant PB for Joly, who is in his 30s.

Medley Relay quick analysis based on heat sheets.

Aus

Men
Cooper – Likely pulling double duty
Yong – Assuming if he does equal or better than ZSC – he may get the MMR final tonight. ZSC may then swap and get the medley relay final if times are similar.
Ambruster – As expected – Temple to slot in.
Chalmers – Double duty – and to ensure qualification for final

Women
Iona – As expected – Mckeown to slot in
Ramsay – It will be interesting to see if its her or Strauch that gets the final slot
Perkins – As expected – Mckeon to slot in
