Georgia Tech hired Iago Moussalem as the new assistant coach of men’s and women’s swimming and diving, the department announced Wednesday.
Moussalem is one of two recent additions to the coaching staff, as fellow assistant coach Arilson Soares da Silva was added to the roster for the start of the 2023-2024 season.
“I am incredibly excited and honored to join Georgia Tech as the new assistant coach,” Moussalem said. “The sport of swimming has played a crucial role in shaping who I am, and I truly believe it can positively impact many others to become better athletes, better students and better humans. I’m eager to contribute to the team’s success and be a part of this prestigious program. I am grateful to Courtney Hart for believing in me and giving me this opportunity.”
Prior to joining the Yellow Jackets, Moussalem served as an assistant coach for the Metro Atlanta Aquatic Club for two years, beginning in June 2022.
Moussalem also launched Fortius Swim, a company that aims to provide access to elite-level training for swimmers around the world through virtual lessons; since its inception, he has created over 200 personalized training sessions.
Moussalem brings a wealth of international and collegiate swimming experience to his new role, as he was a member of the Brazilian National Swim Team and represented his country on the global stage on multiple occasions, including the 2018 Pac Pacific Championships and the 2019 World University Games.
For his own collegiate career, Moussalem competed for Miami University in Ohio for three seasons before transferring to Indiana University for his final year. His last year at Miami, Moussalem brought home five individual titles at the Mid-American Championships, being named Most Outstanding Swimmer for his performances.
Head coach Courtney Hart welcomed Moussalem to the coaching staff and expressed her excitement to see how he will impact the program.
“As we welcome Iago Moussalem to our coaching staff, we are excited to bring on someone with such an inspirational journey and exceptional expertise,” Hart said. “His dedication to the sport and commitment to excellence are evident in his impressive accomplishments and the positive influence he has had on swimmers worldwide. We look forward to seeing Iago inspire our student-athletes and elevate our program to new heights.”
This past season saw Georgia Tech’s men’s and women’s teams both place 9th overall at the ACC Championships. Despite not ranking the highest at the conference championships, the Yellow Jackets still sent 11 athletes on to the Division I NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, with nine men and two women qualifying. Even more notably, five Georgia Tech swimmers competed in the Paris Olympics, representing four different countries.
The Yellow Jackets saw four members of the men’s swimming and diving team and six members of the women’s team graduate in May, although the majority of the program’s top athletes remain with the team.
Outside of his roles in the swimming world, Moussalem has also spent brief stints at Traive Finance, Fitter & Faster and Peake Media following his graduation from Indiana in 2021, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sport marketing and management.
Moussalem will kick off his first season at Georgia Tech this upcoming fall for the 2024-2025 season.
Good timing. With the exit of Hart, they would have had three swimming coaches (total) for both programs. This dude makes four, which is still light. Recruiting season is upon them too. Good luck.
Her hires are becoming more obscure than Margo’s.
Well she has no idea what she’s doing so that’s probably why
Will definitely boost domestic recruiting /s
(Seven Nation Army) Oooohhh Iago Moussalem… what a great guy and hire!
