Summer McIntosh Named Closing Ceremony Flag Bearer For Canada

After a historic week in the pool in Paris, Summer McIntosh has been selected to be the women’s flag bearer for Canada at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

McIntosh became the first Canadian swimmer to ever win three gold medals at the same Olympics as she won gold in the women’s 200 fly, 200 IM, and 400 IM. She broke her own World Junior Records in the 200 fly and 200 IM. She also was the only woman from any country to win three individual gold medals last week.

CANADIAN INDIVIDUAL MULTI-GOLD MEDALISTS

SWIMMER OLYMPIC GAMES # OF GOLDS
Summer McIntosh 2024 Paris
3 (Women’s 200 and 400 IM, 200 Fly)
Alex Baumann 1984 LA
2 (Men’s 200 and 400 IM)
George Hodgson 1912 Stockholm
2 (Men’s 400 and 1500 free)

In addition to her individual success, she also helped lead Canada to sit 4th in the final medal table with 3 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze. That was the team’s 2nd most medal haul ever after winning four golds and 10 total medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

McIntosh joins at least six other swimmers who will be flag bearers at today’s ceremony. She will be a flag bearer alongside Ethan Katzberg who won gold in the men’s hammer throw. Both had left Paris but will return to be Canada’s flag bearers.

SWIMMERS SELECTED AS CLOSING CEREMONY FLAG BEARERS:

The closing ceremony is scheduled to begin tonight at 9 pm local time in Paris (3 pm EST). It is scheduled to end at midnight local time (6 pm EST).

Dan Wiffen just posted on IG that he missed the ceremony as he fell ill with a bug and had to be rushed to hospital.

Doesn’t take a genius to figure out what may have caused this.

The one team that could have been chosen over Summer ……..all 4 men who won gold on the 4-100 relay in track ; might have been the biggest upset in history there! Booom-WHO?

Glad Summer got it 👍 as I’m a bigger swim fan.

Canada were big underdogs in that relay. I remember seeing +3400 a few days ago. But obviously everything changes when the United States doesn’t qualify for the final. Despite all the Olympic struggles they were -300 favorite.

Rooth in the decathlon was not as underestimated as some believe. He was +2200 to +2500, depending where you shopped. Hocker in the men’s 1500 was anywhere from +1500 to +2200.

I’m not sure about some of the field events, like women’s shot put. That one was really upside down. The winner from Germany might have been the biggest long shot among all the track and field gold medalists.

Uh the US did qualify for the final… They screwed up the baton pass during the final.

Media speculated that the 4×100 relay team would not be selected to carry the flag simply because Andre DeGrasse carried it at the opening ceremonies. Seeing Summer next to Ethan, you begin to appreciate the massive size of a athlete he is! Was fascinated to see how many swimmers were selected to carry nation flags this time round.

I don’t remember any Country in the ceremony having more than 2 flag bearers. So I don’t think you’re allowed to have the whole relay team bear the flag.

Re the list of swimmers selected:

According to Team France’s offcial account, French men’s flag bearer is Dupont instead of Marchand. (Leon declined? Or false announcement by media previously?)

Milak and Mityukov will serve as flag bearers for Hungary and Switzerland respectively.

It looks like Tatjana will carry the flag for SA too, but no offcial annoucement yet.

the French Olympic committee preferred to honor a team sport (rugby) rather than the best French athlete of the games! As I already said in another post, France does not deserve the talent of Léon Marchand.

It does feel strange (and disrespectful) that they already made an announcement and then replaced him.

I correct my comment because, in fact, they made Lėon play a major role in the closing ceremony..

This is why we shouldn’t jump to conclusions and get outraged so quick and accuse countries of being undeserving.
