Additional Records Go Down On Final Day Of 2024 Queensland SC Championships

2024 QUEENSLAND SC CHAMPIONSHIPS

The final day of the 2024 Queensland Short Course Championships unfolded from the Brisbane Aquatic Centre with additional state records biting the dust.

One fell at the hands of 27-year-old Grayson Bell of Somerville House in the men’s 50m breaststroke event.

Bell got to the wall at a speedy mark of 26.64 to beat Bond’s Joshua Collett and Southport’s Nash Wilkes. The former claimed silver in 26.99 while the latter snagged bronze in 27.11.

As for Bell, his 26.64 outing overtook the former Queensland All Comers Record of 26.85, a time Tommy Sucipto put on the books in 2016.

For Collett’s part, the 20-year-old wound up upgrading his silver to gold in 2 other events on the day. He clocked a time of 2:08.73 to win the men’s 200m breaststroke and also claimed gold in the 200m IM in 1:57.01.

Collett’s 200m IM effort checked in as a big-time personal best, destroying his previous PB of 1:58.24 from 2 years ago.

Among the younger set, 13-year-old Cohen Tarrant of Somerset did damage in his age category’s breaststroke events.

The teen clocked a time of 2:22.45 to handily defeat the 200m breast field, registering the sole time under 2:31. His result knocked over 3 seconds off his previous Queensland Age Record in the event.

Then in the 50m breast, Tarrant produced a mark of 29.89 to grab the gold, erasing his previous Queensland Age Record and Queensland All Comers Record of 30.10 established in June of this year.

The girls’ 15-year-old 50m breast also saw its state’s All Comers Record go down, with 2 swimmers getting under the benchmark.

Touching first was Georgia Edwards who notched 31.36 to eke out the win over Maya Zunker who was right behind in 31.80. Both girls dipped under Tessa Wallace‘s former Queensland Age Record of 31.88 put up 16 years ago in 2008.

Additionally, they cleared the 31.96 All Comers Record Niamh Bedggood hit in 2020.

Finally, 13-year-old Bryce Krause of Fairholme got it done for gold in his age group’s 50m breast. His time of 26.33 not only beat his competitors by over 2 seconds but it also lowered the former state record/All Comers Record of 26.46 James Yu registered in 2018.

Additional Notes

  • Rackley’s Noah Kamprad was too quick to catch in the open men’s 400m free, clocking 3:46.60, his personal best by just under 5 seconds.
  • 17-year-old Hayley Mackinder stopped the clock in 2:23.78 to take her age group’s 200m breast while 20-year-old Siennaa Harben of Bond won the open category in 2:23.45.
  • The men’s open 50m back saw Somerset’s Mark Nikolaev reap gold in 23.46 as the sole sub-24-second racer.
  • Gritth’s 21-year-old Mia O’Leary topped the open women’s 50m breast in 30.86 for the 4th-best time of her career.

A few errors there that need correction.

Tarrant now sits at the top of the national SCM age rankings in all three breaststroke events.

His times are gross.

I remember when those times were at or near the top of the 14 yrs list, and it wasn’t that long ago.

Do you reckon they’ll ratify his long course 100 breast age record from school nationals? Would be a bummer if they don’t because it doesn’t look like he’ll have another chance to breat it.

I didn’t even know he broke them, those records were pretty solid too, ZSC was awesome at 13.

They should, can’t imagine any reason they wouldn’t. I know that they have proper officials and everything, only difference is the age groups being birth year instead of age on the day. But they ratify records from junior international meets, so I don’t really see the difference.
