Creighton Prep High School made the long drive from Omaha to chilly Minnesota worth it. Tom Beck’s squad won the Gold Division of the Maroon and Gold Invite in runaway fashion, breaking all sorts of meet records including four from senior Jacob Molacek.
Molacek went 1:38.90 to win the 200 free by over 6 seconds. He would later come back to 54.74 for the 100 breast title. Perhaps his most impressive swim of the day was his 19.83 leading off the 200 free relay, just a hundredth off his lifetime-best. He also dropped a 43.88 anchoring the 400 free relay coming immediately off of his 100 breaststroke.
Molacek took time after the meet to chat with SwimSwam about swims, his goals, and his future event focuses at Auburn. You can watch his interview above. Of note: Molacek was very open about his ambition to break the national high school record of 53.66 in the 100 breaststroke.
Molacek’s teammate Sean Tate won a pair of races, going a meet-record 20.76 in the 50 free and 46.49 in the 100 free. Tate and his brother Ryan joined Molacek and Mike Bauwens on the free relays, which Creighton swept. Ryan Tate also won the 100 fly in 52.01.
East Ridge senior Sam Scholz touched out Ryan Tate in the 200 IM to keep the title in Minnesota hands. In-state powerhouse Minnetonka got a win from senior diver Taylor Hall and Maple Grove’s Mike Rouleau, who will swim for Missouri S&T next fall, won the 100 back.
Creighton Prep won the Gold division of the invite handily. We talked to coach Tom Beck after the meet:
Beck’s team is staying busy, dueling Minnetonka the night before the Maroon and Gold meet and competing right away Monday on return to Omaha.
The Maroon and Gold Invite is one of the largest high school meets in the nation, with four separate division competing over the course of one day. The Gold division is the premier class; you can find results of that division here.
Rochester Century won the Maroon Division in a tight battle with Prior Lake. Simley nipped Forest Lake for the Bronze title, and Roseville beat Alexandria for the Tiger Division crown.
We are always looking to improve our meet by reaching out and pulling some of the best teams in the nation to come to the Maroon and Gold Invitational (largest one day High School meet in the country). Wow! We hit the jack pot with having Creighton Prep attend this year!
