Bonnies Come up Short Against Bearcats

The St. Bonaventure women’s swimming and diving returned to the pool after a month long break to face the Binghamton Bearcats at the Saunders Aquatic Center on Saturday. Although the Bonnies continue to improve on the season, they fell to the Bearcats by a score of 180-120.

Sophomore Shannon Haberman struck first for the Bonnies, placing first in the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:31.47. Teammate Lauren Caldwell finished third in the event, touching in at 10:54.11, just behind Binghamton’s Lauren Flower. Next came the 200 yard freestyle, which saw only one Bonnie place in the top three with Rachel Bull recording a time of 1:56.42. In the next event, the 100 yard breaststroke, senior Mackenzie Courtney was also the only Bonnie to finish in the top three, touching in with a time of 1:11.71, just falling short of Binghamton’s Emilia Carlino who came in with a time of 1:11.61.

Later in the day, Caldwell won the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:09.42. Teammate Elizabeth Malone touched in shortly thereafter with a time of 2:11.38, her first of three top finishes on the day. Malone would also place third in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 59.88 and first in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:12.93. Senior Jeannette Dietrich came in second in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 25.09, a second behind Binghamton’s Caitlin Kelly who finished with a time of 24.00.

Freshman Tanja Kirmse grabbed her first top finish later in the afternoon, finishing second in the 100 yard freestyle, registering a time of 54.06. Teammate Rachel Bull grabbed her second top finish of the day in the same event, placing third with a time of 54.69. Sophomore Adelyn Graf joined a long list of Bonnies to finish in the top three on the day, placing second in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:11.48, followed by teammate Meaghan McCann who touched in at 2:11.97. Laura O’Beirne was the lone Bonnie to place in the 200 yard breaststroke, coming in with a third place finish and a time of 2:34.62.

The Bonnies concluded the individual events with two top finishes in the 500 yard freestyle. Tanja Kirmse came in first in the event with a time of 5:06.53, followed by teammate Maggie Woods who placed second, registering a time of 5:07.85.

Two Brown and White relay teams saw success. In the 200 yard medley relay, the team of McCann, Malone, Courtney, and Dietrich placed second with a time of 1:52.85. At the conclusion of the meet in the 400 yard freestyle relay, the team of Kirmse, Bull, Dietrich, and Haberman also placed second with a time of 3:37.29.

Abby O’Brien placed third in the three meter dive where she registered a score of 181.13.  She also placed in the 1 meter dive with a score of 163.36.

The Bonnies will return to Reilly Center on Wednesday (January 22) to take on the University of Buffalo. The meet is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
