The real action begins at the 2014 SEC Championships in Athens, Georgia on Tuesday night with the 200 medley and 800 free relays.
However, the Kentucky men warmed up the pool in the time trials session with a blazing 1:25.57 NCAA Automatic Qualifier in the 200 yard medley relay.
Lucas Gerotto, George Greenhalgh, Clemson transfer Erick Bruck, and Chris Lott combined to move the team up to third in the country this year. That’s probably their best relay, but even that result was really surprising when looking at some of the splits.
This is a great sign for Kentucky; the SEC men are one of the few conferences in the country where there’s no walkovers; every team has a chance to put up huge swims to steal events and grab some headlines.
The splits:
- Gerotto – 21.79
- Greenhalgh – 23.80
- Bruck – 20.77
- Lott – 19.22
Their previous season-best was a 1:28.58 in that race from their mid-season Ohio State Invite. They’ve since totally switched the order, moving Gerotto to backstroke and Bruck to the fly leg, with Lott coming through strong to hold down the 4th leg on the anchor.
The top two teams in the country so far are Michigan and Arizona, tied in 1:25.40’s. Of course, remember that this is the Arizona B relay from the UT Invite, as their A relay, which was even faster, got DQ’ed.
Even faster tonight for UK in a very fast event to start the fastest meet in the country. The divers got into the action too for the ‘Cats. Should be a fun SEC meet.

That’s an eye opener for sure! Nearly every team in all the power conferences have a decent shot at winning at least one event at conference champs. I can only think of a few exceptions in men’s SEC, B1G (Big Ten), Pac 12, and the rest of the majors.
