2025 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championship

It’s only day one of the DII NCAA Championships, and the meet got started on a fast foot with Tampa’s new NCAA record in the men’s 800 freestyle relay.

Men’s 800 Freestyle Relay — Timed Final

  • NCAA DII Record: 6:18.46 – Queens (Dreesens, Pijulet, Kusch, Arakelian) (2017)
  • Meet: 6:18.46 – Queens (Dreesens, Pijulet, Kusch, Arakelian) (2017)

Top 8:

  1. Tampa (Brandon, Knollman, Hamlin, Ponce de Leon) — 6:17.93 DII Record
  2. Drury (Mineur, Zornoza Quiros, Nogueira, Vissotto) — 6:19.67
  3. McKendree (Gandaria-Hernandez, Gavrysh, Souza, Yavari) — 6:20.34
  4. Wingate — 6:24.13
  5. Indy — 6:27.77
  6. Grand Valley — 6:28.56
  7. Wayne State — 6:29.25
  8. Colorado Mesa — 6:30.87

Tampa came in at 6:17.93, almost two seconds ahead of the rest of the field, and about half-a-second ahead of the previous record of 6:18.46 set by Queens back in 2017

The Tampa team did not lead the race the whole time, in fact, 2nd place team Drury was ahead for the first half. 5th year Caleb Brandon led the team off in 1:36.42. This time was about a second off his lifetime best of 1:35.28 from this meet last year, but it was a new season best time for him, improving from the 1:36.58 he went at the Gamecock Invitation in November.

Brandon was followed by senior Parker Knollman, who came in at 1:34.44 to bring the team almost tied with Drury, which was exactly what sophomore Jacob Hamlin needed to bring the team into first overall. Hamlin split 1:32.74, which is significantly faster than his 200 seed time of 1:35.38 and almost four seconds faster than the 1:36.15 he went on this relay at last year’s championships.

Finally, Rafael Ponce De Leon, another grad student, brought the relay home in 1:34.33 to bring them home under the previous NCAA record.

Split Comparison

Old NCAA Record Queens (2017 NCAA Championships) New NCAA Record Tampa (2025 NCAA Championships)
Dion Dressens 1:33.62 Caleb Brandon 1:36.42
Paul Pijulet 1:35.36 Parker Knollman 1:34.44
Marius Kusch 1:34.15 Jacob Hamlin 1:32.74
Nicholas Arakelian 1:35.33 Rafael Ponce De Leon 1:34.33
6:18.48 6:17.93

Just looked up Mckendree (~1500 students) and Drury (~1300 students). Had no idea they were such small schools.

Are they getting this great talent from scholarships? I don’t know much about D2.

I can’t speak for now, but in the mid 90’s when we swam against Drury several times a year, and generally though not always, got smoked I learned they absolutely were doing scholarships for swimming at much higher levels than a lot of other D2 schools. They didn’t have football and essentially all the scholarship money other D2v schools used on football they used on swimming. They even gave full rides to multiple swimmers which is very rare in D2. Take that and add in good coaching and facilities and you get a good swimming program.

What happened to Queens? Didn’t make the jump to D1 as easily as people thought!
