Summit League Championships
The 2014 Summit League Championships ended how they began: with newcomer Denver winning a majority of the events.
Clara Jenck of Denver and her teammates Tyra Rooney and Jaclyn Best opened the final day’s events with a 1-2-3 sweep of the mile. Jenck won with 16:39.50.
The Pioneer men also claimed the top three spots in their mile: sophomore Dylan Bunch set the Summit League record, finishing in 14:59.58, while teammates Jeremiah Zgliczynski and Matt Absher were second and third.
Sam Corea took down yet another Summit League record with her stunning 1:52.81 victory in the women’s 200 back. That’s only .10 off the NCAA “A” cut. Teammates Bridgette McNally and Gretchen Cohen took second and third, respectively.
Kyle Milberg of Denver (1:43.84) led his teammates William Van Dehy and Darian Brunetti in an all-Pioneer podium in the men’s 200 back.
Denver’s Drew Matthews etched her name in the record books when she broke the Summit League mark in the 100 free with a 49.73. Her teammate Johanna Roas came in second. University of Nebraska Omaha sophomore Natalie Renshaw finished third.
Kyle Robrock of Denver went 44.87 to win the men’s 100 free in front of Western Illinois University’s Tyler Neaveill and IUPUI’s Lennart Kuester.
Emily Campbell of South Dakota State won the women’s 200 breast by .01! Trailing Denver’s Amanda Sanders by .90 at the 100 and by a full second at the 150, Campbell outsplit Sanders by .99 for the last 50 and secured the win. University of Nebraska Omaha’s Maddie Hutt was third.
Tanner Krall of Denver won the men’s 200 breast in a Summit League record-breaking time of 1:59.06. Teammate Tim Cottam finished second while IUPUI’s Adam Ferguson was third.
University of Nebraska Omaha freshman Morgan Stepp (2:04.06) won the women’s 200 fly in a heat that included four from South Dakota State. Of those, Andee Budahl and Trina Young were the second- and third-place finishers.
Denver’s Andrew Torres won the men’s 200 fly in 1:45.90. Fellow Pioneer Scott Bergstrom took second; Western Illinois University’s Chris Neaveill, third.
In women’s three-meter diving, Greysen Hertting of University of South Dakota won with 270.85 points, a mere .70 ahead of runner-up Dana Gau of Denver. Third place went to Diana Knipfer from University of Nebraska Omaha.
University of Denver won the women’s 400 free relay with a new Summit League record: 3:21.04. The relay consisted of of Corea, Roas, Morgan Mullenix, and Matthews. South Dakota State took second and IUPUI was third.
In the men’s relay, Denver’s Patrick Guillory (45.77), Robrock (44.58), Douglas Mackenzie (45.18), and Milberg (44.38) combined for a 3:00.36 first-place finish. They were only a half-second ahead of IUPUI (Carroll, Kuester, Ferguson and Jared Allen).
