A brief explanation: we use the expressions “ups” and “mids” and “downs” to describe the three finals at the ACC Championships. “Ups” are A-finalists, “Mids” are B-finalists, and “Downs” are C-finalists. In the ACC, all three of those score, by the following scoring chart for individual events (double for relays):

Through two days of competition, and with all diving points added in, here’s where our math has the standings right now.
1. Virginia Tech – 545
2. NC State – 433
3. Virginia – 402
4. Florida State – 400
5. North Carolina – 394.5
6. Notre Dame – 371
7. Duke – 262.5
8. Georgia Tech – 252
9. Pitt – 221
10. Miami – 176
11. Boston College – 123
After this morning’s prelims sessions, it looks like Friday will be ‘separation Friday’ at the ACC Championships, as the meet’s two leaders Virginia Tech and North Carolina State have the most finalists, and the most A-finalists, and with each A-finalist scoring 22 points-and-up, that gap from the likes of Virginia, Florida State, and North Carolina is going to expand in finals. Of course, this is probably NC State’s strongest day of the meet, so they’ll need a gap if they want to fight those other mentioned teams back. Virginia Tech isn’t great in the Saturday events either, though on paper they’re better than NC State.
In that race for 3rd (at least, 3rd after Friday), note how many B finalists UNC and Notre Dame have as well.

Meet Mobile shows VT having 565 points after Friday morning prelims. The unofficial standings you show in this article show VT having 545 points. Any idea what is causing the 20 point difference?
Let me look into it.
I’ve run the numbers again, and still can’t get anything to match up to 565.
For now, let’s call it all “unofficial, but close.” We’ll revisit tonight, and hopefully things will make more sense.
I think I just figured it out. VT diving totals were 205 and swimming through event 7 is 360. The total come to the 565 that Meet Mobile shows. I came up with the 205 diving total as follows:
1 m. 51 pts
3 m 71 pts
platform 83 pts
Thanks for the great coverage of the ACC meet!
Go Hokies!
That’s what I couldn’t figure out. When I went back and added up the points for the two remaining divings, got the same numbers as you, and then added them to scores through Thursday evening, and got 569. Strange.
We’ll go with Meet Mobile as the “unofficial” total tonight.
Surprised UVA is doing as well as they are, after losing 3 top swimmers, due to the miserable circumstances the old coaching staff left.
Which circumstance are you referring to? These last 8 months have been pretty interesting.
so, it’s possible Virginia could be in 6th place after tonight, unbelievable….
