Chesterton Breaks National Public High School Record in 200 Medley Relay

The Chesterton, Indiana, High School boys’ team has broken their 2nd National Public High School Record of the Indiana State Championships with a 1:29.64 in the 200 medley relay.

The team of Aaron WhitakerJack WallarBlake Pieroni, and Gary Kostbade not only broke their own State Record from prelims, but they swam the time for the fastest Public High School 200 yard medley relay in history, clearing the old record of 1:30.01 set by Saline High School (Michigan) last spring.

The comparative splits, with Chesterton’s times first and Saline’s second:

  • Whitaker – 21.90/ Boland 22.75
  • Wallar – 25.12/ Ehrman 25.20
  • Pieroni – 21.61/ Bundas 22.19
  • Kostbade – 21.01/ Whitener 19.87

The Chesterton relay was made up of three seniors, with that one freshman on the end Kostbade. As compared to the “record line,” Chesterton’s veterans knew they had to give their freshman an edge early, and they did their part before Kostbade brought them home strong.

The overall high school record remains a 1:27.47, done by the Baylor School in Tennessee. There’s something special about public school records in relays, however, as it usually means all of the swimmers are from the same area.

With almost the same relay, Chesterton was a 1:32.45 last year, but last year they had a lot of swimmers in different places.

This was one of two National Records broken by Chesterton at this meet. They also broke the 400 free relay public school record in prelims on Friday.
