The Ohio State Buckeyes have capitalized on one final chance at NCAA qualifying in the last session of the 2014 Yellow Jacket Invitational: a Georgia-Tech-hosted last chance meet.
Ohio State senior Garrett Trebilcock not only swam a time that is a sure-fire NCAA qualifier in the 100 yard back, but it also broke the School Record. He swam a 45.92, which broke Andrew Elliott’s 2010 record of 46.01. That moves him into a three-way tie for the 10th-fastest time in the country, and with somewhere between 28 and 30 swimmers likely to be invited in each event, he’s a lock for all intents and purposes to swim in Austin individually.
That’s a big move for the senior taking his last shot, as coming into the meet his season-best was just a 47.39, ranked just 65th in the country, after a bit of a flop at Big Tens. As it turns out, he just needed another week of rest, and perhaps a bit of well-timed pressure, to make a huge time drop.
He’s one of two Ohio State backstrokers to earn an invite to NCAA’s in Atlanta over the weekend, after Steven Zimmerman punched his ticket on Saturday.
He was the only swimmer who for sure earned an NCAA invite on this meet’s final day.
Penn State’s John Hasuer possibly will have a swim at NCAA’s. He went a 1:34.89 in the 200 yard free, which is .01 slower than he was at Big Tens, so his caused wasn’t helped much this weekend. That leaves him 36th in the country, but the 200 free is a race where there can be a lot of highly-ranked swimmers from relay lead-offs who opt not to swim the race individually. Jack Conger is a good example – our guess is that he won’t swim this 200 free at NCAA’s. It will be a tough, long wait for Hauser, though.
Another Ohio State senior, Alex Miller, swam a 15:08.72 in the 1650 free. That won’t get a ticket to NCAA’s, but he did have a very good meet and drop a lot of time in his two best events: the 500 free and the 1650 free.
And, I just can’t resist adding that, Garrett, it could be worse for you buddy…think ‘Sharpcock,’ or ‘Flatcock.’ Or the dreaded ‘Semitonecock.’ You lucked out with ‘Trebil.’
Doin work man. Good knowledge. And I thought I was gonna win the Swimmy for longest post of the year…guess I’ll start shooting for a lifetime achievement award – I like to think of myself as the Robert Redford, or Peter O’Toole, of swimswam. But I’m probably more Groucho Marx; of course, many seem to wish I were Jean Renoir aka silent. Regardless, I can pretend, a la Ms. Field(mmm, cookies): ‘they like me, they really like me’ or, as Penn(Sean, not his brother Nice Guy Eddie) would say, ‘they tolerate me, they really tolerate me.’
Back on topic…I think this is where those still involved in the process have us beat. Predicting the actual lines is more art than… Read more »
