VIDEO: Stanford’s Lia Neal and Coach of the Year, Greg Meehan thrilled with meet

What a great NCAAs for the Stanford team. Coach Greg Meehan was selected as Coach of the Year, and Olympian Lia Neal contributed immensely to Stanford’s 2nd place team finish. They had a total of 12 here at the meet, including one diver and one relay only swimmer, and produced great results with a small group of women.

Lia’s Favorite race: 200 free relay.

Coach Meehan – He shares his “special moments”.

Others have suggested: Future Olympic Coach?

Congratulations!

I’m not sure I agree with these statements. Felicia and Maya were phenomenal, but this is the first year Felicia has been healthy for a long time. The underclass women flat out underperformed this year. Sarah Haase was a 59 breaststroker in high school. Julia Anderson was a 1:45/ 49 freestyler in high school. Allison Brown was 6th in the 200 IM at Jr Worlds, but she didn’t even make NCAAs this year. Where is Allison Arnold? KC Moss? Haley Sims? There are a lot of National Jr Team swimmers on this roster that aren’t much better (if at all) than they were in high school.

The Emma Reaney and Breeja Larson stories are much more impressive, as it took… Read more »

Bravo! An excellent post!

Not because it sheds any light on the real achievements of anyone at all, but because it serves as a hazard warning for the twisted, tortured psyche that seems to take root when one becomes a Cal athletics supporter.

“Cal Bear” is a splendid archetype of the species – the strong notes of envy and insecurity are layered with subtle hints of conspiratorial paranoia and Marxist class struggle. Roll on you Bears! You guys are the best!

Haha. Is it possible to get SwimSwam to hire this guy so he/she can write articles?

Don’t forget Olsen for 50 and 100 free as well. She has shown some serious free speed and could be developed to be another option for sprint free.

Next year, and in the years to come Stanford will be in the serious hunt for the NCAA title. It is too soon to tell, but I think next year there will be an extreme 3 way battle with Georgia-Cal-Stanford. Janet Hu and Simone Manuel will offer huge relay opportunities for Stanford. Kylie Stewart and Meaghan Raab will add much needed depth and Stewart will make a huge individual impact for Georgia. Cal gets more butterfliers but more importantly Cierra Runge will add huge points in the mid-distance freestyles. It will be very close if Pelton and Bootsma hop back on their train, if Georgia can continue their SEC times at NCAAs and if Stanford keeps progressing and developing and… Read more »

Congrats to Stanford.
Fantastic meet for the Cardinals.
Felicia Lee was a great team leader.
Maya DiRado was on fire.
Lia Neal had a great freshman year.
Katie Olsen was stronger than ever on breaststroke.
Their relays have been impressive.
And yes, great coaching from Greg Meehan. When most of your swimmers are in great shape and improve their best times when it counts the most, it’s a great job by the coach.
“Others have suggested: Future olympic coach?”
Yes, it’s me! 🙂
As you say in USA in basketball, he has the momentum. Results speak for himself. And in 2016 he will qualify 4 or 5 girls from Stanford… Read more »

Why do I write the same thing twice? 🙄
I’m really tired after that crazy week of swimming. 😆
