Another! Kevin Cordes Downs Own 200 Breast NCAA/US Open/American Records

A day removed from breaking his own NCAA, U.S. Open, and American record in the 100 breast (twice), Kevin Cordes was back at it again, winning the 200 breaststroke in 1:48.66, clipping his NCAA, U.S. Open, and American records by two hundredths of a second.

Cordes did what he does best from start to finish, creating great easy speed with an incredibly low stroke count; after three strokes on the first length, he held four strokes for most of the race, before winding it up late to get home.

Here’s a split comparison from his four American record performances:

Notably, Cody Miller beat Nic Fink to the touch for second, 1:51.82 to 1:51.92.  Anton McKee, a freshman from Alabama, was fourth in 1:52.31.

In the past Kevin has swam faster in LC. Look for a breakout season coming up and let your imaginations go wild for 2016!

Hope so, I’d love to see him really reach his long course potential in this race. I would never expect him to put up a 2:04 in 2016… but I would love to see what that would look like.

He’s obviously brilliant in both breaststroke distances, but I think he’s really something special when it comes to the 200. To go a 1:48.6 before anyone else can even get under 1:51.0 is truly awe-inspiring.

Kevin Cordes will be at his best in long course in 2016 after a full year of long course training.

For next summer I predict he will swim around 59.00/59.20 in the 100 breast and 2.07.50/2.07.75 in the 200 breast.

Those times might be more suited for 2016 goals…that’s a really quick 200.

He was in 2.08.34 last year. No reason he can’t swim under 2.08 next summer.

Well.. I think it may be needed a 2:06 high 2:07 flat to medal… I would not be surprised if Gyurta/Yamaguchi can go 2:06.. at 2:07 we may see Mattison Cordes Koch and maybe someone else too

Cordes’s 2:08.3 from last year is only scratching the surface for Kevin.

I so hope he can get all that speed to really carry over to long course by 2016. 1:48.6 converts roughly to a 2:04… as conversions aren’t always entirely accurate, I don’t think anyone expects him to be that fast at this point. But wouldn’t it be brilliant to see him go a low 2:07, or maybe even get into the 2:06 range?

Lets face it:Cordes is the swimmer of the meet with two out of reach records.
Honours for Cieslak and Murphy(freshman of the meet).
