This week, a number of swimming and diving programs around the country have announced the Fulbright Scholar honors given to one of their swimmers or alumni.
That list includes Wabash College captain Adam Barnes, Washington & Lee University captain Eric Shuman, UMBC alum Mitchell Donovan and Wheaton’s Matt Sexton.
The prestigious Fulbright Scholarship program sends exceptional students overseas to study, teach or conduct research, in the hopes of forming bonds between people from the United States and citizens of other countries.
Adam Barnes was a three-year captain for Wabash, making the consolation final at the conference level in all four of his collegiate seasons. He earns the Fulbright Scholarship to support him as he heads to Spain to serve as an English Teaching Assistant, after which he plans to move on to medical school. Eric Shuman was a four-year contributor at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships for Washington & Lee, and was also a team captain. His Fulbright grant takes him to Israel, where the psychology student will work on a project titled “Can Anger Lead to Conflict Resolution? Redirecting Anger Responses to Promote Peace.” You can read more about his project and the award on the W&L website, here.
Mitchell Donovan, who graduated from UMBC in 2011, also won a Fulbright Scholarship after staying at UMBC to work on his Master’s degree in geography and environmental science. Donovan will be doing research in Finland on “effects of sediment as a contaminant from agricultural land to Finnish streams, as well as the Baltic Sea,” according to this press release on the America East conference website. After his year abroad, Donovan plans to come back to the U.S. to get his Ph. D.
Matt Sexton swims for Wheaton, where he was Academic All-Conference in the NEWMAC (New England Women’s and Men’s Athetic Conferece). Sexton will head to Poland on his Fulbright Scholarship, where he’ll teach English. After his year abroad, Sexton plans to jump into medical school in the U.S. Read more about Sexton’s award here.
