Once every four years, Scotland gets to name its own team for a major international competition outside of the broader British team at the Commonwealth Games. This gives these athletes and their supporters some sense of identity with their ‘home nation heroes,’ and this year is especially prominent as Scotland is playing host to the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Whereas many countries around the world, both for the Commonwealth Games and for other major events, have been pinching-back the sizes of their travel rosters, Scottish Swimming doesn’t have nearly as much concern (perhaps that’s a philosophy, perhaps that’s because they’re the host team).
The well-known stars are on the team, swimmers like Hannah Miley, Michael Jamieson, Craig Hamilton, Dan Wallace, Corrie Scott, and Kathryn Johnstone are all on the team.
At the same time, some rising swimmers will get their first valuable international exposure at this meet. Swimmers like 18-year old Jack Thorpe from Edinburgh University. He’s a 23.1/51.0 sprint freestyler and is still a couple of years from being able to break through on the British roster. This expanded roster for the Scots could provide accelerated development for Thorpe in an area where the overall British program really needs improved depth.
At the 2010 Commonwealth Games, won 6 medals, all but one of which came on the men’s side. The two gold medal winners were Miley in the 400 IM and Robbie Renwick in the 200 free. The competition in Renwick’s race has gotten significantly faster since that 1:47.88 won, but so too has his quality in that shorter of the middle distance races.
Swimming at the Commonwealth Games runs from July 24th through July 29th.

Men’s Breaststroke is going to be huge at the Commonwealth games, all three races. Could we see a World Record in he 200 Breast?
Was there any selection meet in Lithuania for the European Championship meet?? I don’t remember seeing anything on it. Just wondering
38 swimmers and 2 divers is what I’m seeing reported by the BBC here in Britain.
Looks like there are 6 swimmers missing from that alphabetical list.

Yeah, I’m not sure what’s up with this website they’re using, but every time I log onto it, there’s a different list of swimmers. They’re now up to 40, though two of those are divers.
No Ross Murdoch?
