UConn Announces Most Outstanding Swimmers
The University of Connecticut had its annual awards banquet last week, naming juniors Chinyere Pigot and Sawyer Franz as their Most Outstanding Swimmers of the Year.
Pigot won the 50 free title at the inaugural American Athletic Conference championships, breaking the school record in 22.81. Franz, meanwhile, won the conference title in the 400 IM at 3:47.88.
According to UConnHuskies.com, the team set 16 school records at the AAC Championships this season. The men took third and the women fourth.
Other awards went to Christine Pedersen, Sophie Nothnagle and Chris Girg (Outstanding Freshman Awards) along with Taryn Urbanus (Outstanding Diver) and Kennedy Meier and Keith Piper (Outstanding Scholar Athletes).
Sanchez named El Paso All-City Swimmer of the Year
Eastwood’s Leonardo Sanchez was named All-City Swimmer of the Year for El Paso, Texas. The junior won the Class 5A state title in the 200 free at 1:38.33.
Along with that, Sanchez took third in the state in the 100 free, and won both of those events at districts and regions.
Sanchez also helped his Eastwood team to team titles at the district and regional level in district and region 1-5A.
Versatile diver Modesti earns All-Racine County Swimming and Diving Athlete of Year
Horlick High School (of Wisconsin) diver Mikey Modeski was named All-Racine County Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Year.
The senior took 6th at the Wisconsin Division 1 Boys State Swimming and Diving championships, taking home a medal for Horlick.
Making Modeski’s resume more impressive is that he’s also a standout soccer player, earning All-Conference honors in that sport three times.
Modeski plans to play soccer next year for Carthage College, though he may add diving to that schedule as well.
