Brazil Winter Champs day 3 see national record for de Deus, near miss for Oliveira

In addition to Matheus Santana‘s outstanding Junior World Record, one Brazilian record fell on day 3 of the Brazil Winter Championships, and a South American record survived a scare by just .15.

It was Leonardo de Deus who stayed hot in taking down the Brazilian record. His 3:50.71 broke his own 400 free mark from just a few weeks ago.

In the women’s 100 free, Larissa Oliveira came within a few tenths of breaking both the Brazilian and South American records. She went 54.87; the record stands at 54.72 from the super-suit era of 2009.

International star Thiago Pereira made his first appearance atop the standings on day 3, winning the 200 IM with a 1:59.58 that broke the championships record.

Three other meet records fell on Friday. The women’s 200 IM saw Manuella Lyrio go 2:20.52 for a champs record. Meanwhile both 200 breaststroke winners took down records – Pamela Alencar for the women (2:31.31) and Henrique Barbosa for the men (2:13.35).

The senior division swam the 50 backstrokes, with both of Wednesday’s 100 back winners repeating. Etiene Medeiros went 28.32 for the women’s victory, while Fabio Santi picked up the men’s win in 25.62.

Other senior winners were Fernando Ernesto dos Santos in the 100 free (50.22) and Jessica Cavalheiro in the 400 free (4:22.62).

In the junior categories, 8 more championships records went down, highlighted by Matheus Santana, who broke his own Junior World Record in the 100 free with a 48.35. You can read more about that swim here, but note that it vaulted Santana to #6 in the world for 2014.
