Zevina Takes Two At Latvian National Championships

European Short Course Championships gold medalist Daryna Zevina of the Ukraine took the women’s 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle on Saturday at the Latvian National Championships in Riga.

Zevina, who has been 1:00.15 in the 100 backstroke already this season, which currently 12th in the world, put up a 1:01.83 to win the event in Riga. The 19 year old also took the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:01.81.

Uvis Kalnins of Latvia took the men’s 400 IM in a time of 4:25.68, which breaks the Latvian national record of 4:27.42 which was set by Guntars Deicmans in 2003.

Estonian teammates Martti Aljand and Ralf Tribuntsov, who both had extremely good showings at the Bergen Swim Festival, walked away with wins on Saturday. Aljand, who has not swum the long course 200 breaststroke since 2011, took the event in a time of 2:16.56, just off his lifetime best of 2:16.31. Tribuntsov won the men’s 100 backstroke in a time of 55.39, just off of his lifetime best of 55.26, which he posted at the World University Games in Kazan last summer.

Povilas Strazdas of Lithuania took the men’s 200 freestyle in a time of 1:50.85.
