Swim Job: Swim Saskatchewan Seeks Provincial Coach / Provincial High Performance Program Coordinator

The Provincial Coach/Provincial High Performance Program Coordinator will report directly to the Executive Director and indirectly to the Director High Performance in working with club coaches to develop provincial team programs that will improve the selection of Saskatchewan swimmers to Swimming Canada Youth, Junior and Senior National teams. He/she will be able to work with various individuals (coaches, athletes, board members, committee/working groups etc.) within the organization.

This position directly relates to Swim Saskatchewan’s mission statement: “Swim Saskatchewan provides leadership and resources to promote: High performance achievement, excellence at all levels and long-term athlete development and participation.” This role will directly support Swim Saskatchewan’s strategic goals set out in both the High Performance Strategic Plan and the overall Strategic Plan for the organization.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

A demonstrated history of coaching success in competitive swimming at the Senior National level.

A proven track record of developing, implementing and evaluating technical competitive swimming programs at the age group, junior and senior levels.

Minimum NCCP Level 3 certification (or equivalent).

An educational background and extensive knowledge and experience of sport science and high performance sport. A Bachelor’s degree in a sport/exercise science discipline (i.e. Kinesiology, Human Kinetics, Physical Education, etc.) will be considered an asset.
A strong understanding of training principles (progressive overload, periodization, tapering, etc.) and athlete development (e.g., Long Term Athlete Development model).

A comprehensive knowledge of competitive swimming.

Written and oral fluency in English.

Proven communication and people skills.

Excellent administrative, programming and computer skills.

The applicant should be a self-motivated individual who can work and accomplish tasks independently, and has the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work collaboratively with others in working towards common goals.

Ability to travel throughout Saskatchewan, Canada and North America.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibility is to lead the development, implementation, monitoring, management and evaluation of High Performance Provincial Team programs (for e.g. provincial stroke camps, tour teams, staging camps, games teams, athlete selection etc.) of Swim Saskatchewan to achieve the goals in the Swim Saskatchewan Strategic Plan and High Performance Strategic Plan. This will also involve Head Coaching responsibilities at all Provincial Team initiatives and also on the Western Canada Games and Canada Games Teams through attendance at the games and by coordinating the preparation of Team Sask.

The position will be responsible for the planning and implementation of effective sport science support and services (e.g. athlete monitoring and testing procedures) during the regular swim season and at various provincial team activities.

The position will develop/establish performance standards including testing, monitoring and evaluating swimmers’ progress and success. This will involve performing regular communication and follow-up meetings with swimmers selected to the various Swim Sask High Performance Provincial Teams and with their club coaches in regards to athlete monitoring and testing, which will include the collection, analysis and reporting of data.

The position will require the development and implementation of a regular visitation schedule with all head coaches in the province for the purpose of working with and providing support to those coaches to help develop and prepare swimmers for future involvement at national team activities and to get more clubs in Saskatchewan thinking and operating at a more competitive and High Performance level.

Develop a talent identification program that can be implemented across the province within club programs and between organizations (for e.g. community programs, Red Cross lessons, etc.)

Monitor results of Saskatchewan swimmers and assist club coaches to identify areas in need of further development. Provide recommendations to club coaches and assist with programs for future athlete development.

Provide swim clubs and coaches with technical advice and expertise in whatever capacity might be required and act as a mentor coach and resource person for all coaches when requested.

Liaise and provide support to the university varsity program(s) to ensure the delivery of quality high performance swimming programs in Saskatchewan for post-secondary athletes.

Attend all Saskatchewan Provincial Championships, provincial coaching association meetings and Swimming Canada Provincial Coaches meetings.

EXPECTATIONS

You must be a team player and understand that when working for a not-for-profit organization it is important to be flexible and be willing to help out whenever required. On occasion this may include assistance with duties that may lie outside the scope of your responsibilities.

You must represent yourself in a professional and respectful manner providing Swim Saskatchewan with a positive image when communicating with both members and external partners (for e.g., Sask Sport).

You must provide a clear criminal record check and clear child abuse registry check.

SALARY

A competitive salary and benefits package will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

This is a full time position and hours of work will vary but will include evenings and weekends. This position is partially fund by a grant from Sask Sport Inc. The contract will be a one-year term with possible extension for a minimum of two additional one-year terms.
