Swimming South Africa (SSA) announced last week that it had signed Memoranda of Understanding with 12 schools to begin building a system to accredit schools that could serve as good development homes for young swimmers.
SSA, the national governing body of the sport, said in its press release that it hopes to “assist athletes in integrating career, education, lifestyle and sporting demands,” and sees an accreditation system as a way to help do this.
For a school, whether a high school or college, to be accredited, it must have “all of the necessary infrastructure, both academic and sporting, in place” to help athletes properly develop, or show themselves to be in the process of creating that infrastructure.
SSA says it wants to eventually have at least two accredited institutions in each of its 9 political provinces. So far, the 12 accredited schools represent 5 provinces.

- Curro Private School, Nelspruit, Mpumalanga .
- Pecanwood College, Hartebeespoort Dam, North West
- Glenwood High School, Durban, Kwa Zulu Natal
- Ashton International College, Ballito, Kwa Zulu Natal
- Crawford College, Sandton, Gauteng
- Crawford College, La Lucia, Kwa Zulu Natal
- Crawford College, Lonehill, Gauteng
- Crawford College, North Coast, Kwa Zulu Natal
- St. Benedicts’s Catholic School, Bedfordview, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng
