UCSD Head Coach Matt Macedo is leaving his post at the Division II power to take an associate head coaching job at UC -Santa Barbara, which is about four hours north.
Macedo was the head coach at UCSD for 6 years, and in a letter today to program alumni says that he will finish out the month of July before leaving.
In 2014, Macedo’s Tritons were 7th at NCAA’s on the men’s side, and 5th on the women’s side. That included Nick Korth, who won the NCAA men’s title in the 200 breaststroke in 1:54.45 – a new Division II National Record.
Macedo was a standout athlete at Cal at the turn of the century, including representing Team USA at the World University Games. He at one point was roommates with Olympic gold medalist Anthony Ervin. After great success in the NCAA’s second division, he now moves up to Division I and will rejoin the Pac 12, at least in half.
The UCSB men, now competing in the brutal Pac 12, finished 7th out of 8 teams. Last season, they sent junior sprinter Wade Allen to the NCAA Championships. The women’s team finished 2nd at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship.
Was recruited by both Matt and Gregg, I have nothing but the highest of remarks for both men. They both spoke extremely highly of each others programs and has a similar coaching style so it seemed. They have a great relationship and I believe this is a good move even though I’m sad to see Gregg near retirement and I don’t even swim for UCSB, but do swim under a great coach who swam under Gregg. Best of luck to both of you in the future!
Great man! Great addition!
Congratulations Matt! Great past, Great Coach, Great Move, Great Future!!! All the best.
Very good news! Love Gregg Wilson but retirement is not to far away and Matt just out himself in position to take over the program.
Congratulations to Matt. He’s been a great coach and motivator at UCSD and will bring a lot to the UCSB program. However, to be completely accurate, the MPSF is not a swim-only conference ( it is a multi-sport conference including such sports as volleyball and water polo), and UCSD has never competed in that conference. They compete in the PCSC and are the perennial conference champions in both men’s and women’s swimming.
It is the University of San Diego (USD) that swims in the MPSF, not UCSD.
Matt is truly an outstanding coach. He’ll undoubtedly be missed at UCSD and become a strong asset to the UCSB program.
Congrats, Matt! Good luck at SB.
Only the best!
