5 Fun Facts About The 2014 FINA Diving World Cup

1. Highest Number of Gold Medals Won

China has collected the highest number of gold medals at the Diving World Cups since its creation in 1979 amounting to 97 medals total (both genders). The USA and Russia placed 2nd and 3rd with 11 and 10 victories respectively.

2. Men’s 3m Springboard  Winner Returns for 4th Attempt At Gold

Winner of the last three editions of the World Cup (2008, 2010 and 2012) He Chong (CHN) will be contesting this discipline during this year’s competition in Shanghai.

3. Minxia Wu Strives to step out of Jingjing Guo’s Shadow

With 11 World Cup medals total (6 gold, 5 silver) Minxia Wu (CHN) is the second best World Cup diver after Jingjing Guo (CHN) who had a total of 16 medals (10 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze).

4. Diving Star Bo Qui Fights for 10m Platform Gold

Chinese diver Bo Qiu will be fighting for his World Cup title this year after having won gold in 2012 and silver in 2010 in this discipline.

5. Ruolin Chen has won 4 consecutive Synchro 10m Platform Crowns

After winning 4 consecutive synchro 10m platforms (2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012) Ruolin Chen will be disputing this discipline once again but this time with Liu Huixia (CHN).

What: 19th FINA Diving World Cup featuring today’s best divers

Who: 160 divers from 28 countries

When: Tuesday July 15 – Sunday July 20, 2014

Where: Outdoor Diving Pool (The Moon Bay) of the Oriental Sports Centre, Shanghai (CHN) venue of the 2011 FINA World Championships.

Competition: Men’s and women’s 3m springboard and 10m platform, individual and synchro. This year’s edition also features a Team Event (9 events total).

Prize Money: USD $10’000 (1st), USD $8’000 (2nd), USD 5’000 (3rd) for each of the 9 events.

About the World Cup: Created in 1979, the World Cup is a biannual, six-day event offering nine titles. The 2012 Diving World Cup was held in London (GBR). In the Olympic years the World Cup is also a qualifying and test event for the Games.
