It wasn’t Ryan Lochte, it wasn’t Michael Phelps, rather it was Frenchman Yannick Agnel who took the title in the men’s 100 free on Sunday at the inaugural Bulldog Grand Slam meet in Athens, Georgia.
Agnel swam a 49.37, and was followed by his teammate Phelps in 49.42, another NBAC swimmer Conor Wyer in 49.54, and Lochte in 4th in 49.64.
It was Phelps in this case who had the best front-half of the race; he and Dwyer were both out in 23.83, just ahead of Agnel. Phelps is rarely a guy who is out in the front of a field in the 100 free, even with how good he has been, but here he happened to be swimming against a group of guys who are very much back-half swimmers.

Higher turnover rate for mr Agnel
Very astute observation about stroke rate. If a swimmer maximizes speed by maximizing stroke length and rate, why Phelps and a others use the hybrid technique that results in fewer strokes? Phelps was ahead in the 200IM in Santa Clara until the freestyle leg. The race video shows that the two swimmers who passed him had a higher stroke rate.

In Orlando, Elizabeth Beisel still on fire. She won the 800 free in 8.29 with a negative split.
And Katie Hoff won the 200 breast in 2.28.
I’m a little surprised to not see MP under 49 after his great weekend so far. Probably a little tired. This supports my view that MP must swim at most 2 individual events. 100 fly/100 back or 100 fly/100 free. Great meet overall for him.
But Yannick Agnel had to win that race. It couldn’t be different!
With the time change, he swam that race on July 14 here in France. National day! 🙂

It was a local meet (Wave the Wheat Invite) and there probably wasn’t much competition, but his times are a little better than they were last month. It will be interesting to see how he does at Nationals.
