13-year old breaststroking phenom Emily Weiss from the Cardinal Community Swim Club in Muncie, Indiana is one of a handful of noteworthy last-minute entries to the 2014 USA Swimming Junior National Championships that begin on Wednesday in Irvine, California.
See the latest version of the 2014 Junior Nationals psych sheets here.
Weiss captured SwimSwam’s attention last weekend when she swam a 1:11.19 at the Indiana Long Course Championships last weekend, which is one of the fastest times ever done by a 13-year old.
Not only was that her first Junior Nationals cut, but by dropping over three seconds from her previous lifetime best, she rocketed all the way up to the 6th seed in that race. She’s also entered with a “bonus” swim in the 200 breaststroke.
Since the original release of the psych sheets last week, there have been quite a few late additions. Below, we’ve focused on those in the latest round of additions that include a swimmer seeded in the top 20:
- Lucca Martins 200 fly (16th), 200 back (110th), 100 back (84th), 200 IM (86th)
- Emily Weiss 100 breast (6th), 200 breast (99th)
- George Horvath 1500 free (17th), 400 free (41st), 800 free (70th), 200 fly (77th)
- Jeff Newkirk 100 free (12th), 200 free (57th), 50 free (115th)
- Noah Hensley 200 free (19th), 100 free (147th), 200 fly (84th), 100 fly (38th)
Good Luck Emily, Indiana is cheering for you!
Weiss, Kylie Powers of Houston Swim Club, and Ashley McCauley of Marlins of Raleigh: All 13, all sub 1:12.5 in the 100 breast, all got their first summer junior cuts in the past two weeks, all in the top 32 seeds with the potential to make finals.
Maybe they can all get in finals and go 1:10 or maybe 109 for Weiss?
McCauley’s got the best shot, in my opinion. Weiss and Powers got their cuts just last weekend (7/25), while McCauley got hers two weekends ago (7/18). It’s tough to drop in succession, so if McCauley’s hitting her taper I think she’s got a good shot at a 1:10-1:11 low.
True, I agree with you now! Weiss was way off in prelims :O
