Erin Voss destroys national record at day 4 prelims of YMCA Nationals

16-year-old Erin Voss of the Greater Holyoke YMCA Vikings went 2:12.43 in the 200 back this morning, obliterating the standing YMCA national record in the event.

Voss was nearly 3 full seconds under the old record of 2:15.38 set by Tricia Weaner 10 years ago. The record-shattering performance wasn’t a huge surprise, as Voss came in with a seed time faster than the record (a 2:13.63 put up in a non-YMCA competition earlier this summer), but the time was still over a full second drop for Voss, who leads the field by 3 heading into finals.

Fresh off a record-breaking night in the 50 breast, YMCA of the Triangle (YOTA)’s Olivia Ontjes is in line to double up. Ontjes is the top seed in the 100 breast at 1:11.82, just six tenths off the national record there. In the boys race, Conner McHugh looks for some revenge after finishing second to Zack Warner in the 50. Warner tied McHugh’s national record in that 50, but McHugh holds the top seed in the 100 after going 1:03.80 this morning. Warner is second in 1:04.47.

Joseph Shepley was the only swimmer under 26 this morning in the boys 50 fly – he went 25.96 for the top seed, though Brad Zdroik is close behind in 26.09. Upper Mainline Y and Yale commit Maddie Zimmerman is the top seed in the girls race with a 28.22.

Sun Coast’s Tristan Sanders is atop the men’s 200 back by a longshot, going 2:04.11 this morning. The second seed is a full three seconds back.

The relay this morning was the 200 medley. Zdroik and Warner combined with Joseph Delbuono and Samuel Hendrix to give Somerset Valley the top boys side in 1:46.48. On the girls side, Countryside are the leaders with a relay featuring incoming college freshmen Alisabeth Marsteller (Princeton) and Emily Slabe (UNC). The team went 1:59.13 this morning.

Proud to be there with Holyoke this week. Splits for 100: 1:05.2 1:07.2. Question is, was she holding back?
