A Final Look At Winning Russian Cup Times Against Those In Paris

2024 PARIS SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES

We made it through the 9th and final day of swimming action at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

Throughout the Olympic competition, I kept tabs on how the times thrown down at La Défense Arena held up against the Russian Swimming Cup which concluded on Sunday, July 28th.

The primary reason is that Russian athletes, who are unable to race in Paris save for those competing as neutral athletes, were incentivized with a carrot of 2 million rubles (~$23,000 USD) from the Russian Swimming Federation should their winning time from the Cup beat that of their Olympic counterparts.

2024 Russian Swimming Cup Results

When all was said and done tonight in Paris, Evgenia Chikunova remained the sole Russian swimmer whose times from the domestic competition would have beaten the Olympic results.

19-year-old Chikunova clocked a time of 1:05.26 in the women’s 100m breast, an outing .02 faster than champion Tatjana Smith of South Africa logged for gold in Paris.

Chikunova’s 200m breast time of 2:18.98 was also faster than the winning time in Paris, a mark of 2:19.24 produced by American Kate Douglass.

Still really tragic how Kolesnikov probably could be one of the best swimmers in the world has had his whole career derailed

I think the tragedy we should focus on is elsewhere…

I feel bad for Evgenia, ngl.
Hopefully, she gets a ton of money for swimming brilliantly.
The rest I’m conflicted about. The war is one thing, but none of them are on the front lines and I doubt anyone /wants/ there to be a war. Rylov’s the exception of course. Nobody needs that guy on the pool deck at an international meet ever again.
And the doping… I suspect it’s the same way China does it or the former GDR. They probably don’t have any say in that either. In that sense, they’re victims of the system but it’s good they’re banned. I just wish it wasn’t so wishy-washy and WADA would deal with everyone equally in terms of suspensions.

What makes you think that Evgenia is clean ?

Probably none of them are clean. But what’s the point in letting one nation who has a state-run doping program swim and not another? And to be fair, she hasn’t tested positive. So by that logic, why do we let anyone swim? Anyway… yes, I feel bad for her being caught up in all this. It’s a bit like the South Africans (most prominently Jonty of course) back in the day. It’s the right and righteous and moral thing to do to not give their nations a spot on the biggest sporting stages. But I can still feel bad for the individual athletes who get caught up in it through no fault of their own.
And on a very,… Read more »

That’s what happens when you don’t have the best in the world to compete against, although, it’s nice to see times indicative of clean swimming.

Wiffen went a 7:38.19 in the 800 free not 7:38.91

Not just Ledecky… the men’s 800m swimmer’s winning time would not have made the women’s podium in Paris, and the men’s 1500m swimmer’s winning time would not even have made the women’s finals.

Russia definitely has better distance freestylers than those who attended this event… I wonder if Stepanov etc. are sick/at war/boycotting the event/fled the country/other?

Stepanov said he was sick for the past few competitions. Could indeed just be bad luck for him.

Not sure why this article needed to happen. Just say there were some real good Breastroke times swam by Chikunova and be done with it.
