You probably think you know something about Aaron Peirsol. You know he’s a three-time Olympian and has won seven Olympic medals (five gold, two silver). You know he still holds the long course world records in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke events. If you’re from Southern California you may even know he STILL owns almost all the backstroke age group records, from 10-and-under all the way to 17-18 (and it’s been almost 20 years since he set that 10-U record).
But did you know how much he does to raise money and awareness for cancer research and to support cancer survivors?
Aaron Peirsol has been involved in numerous projects over the years, including Hope Rocks!, Swim Across America, the Arena worldwide “Swim Challenge” benefitting the Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation®, and Eric Shanteau’s Swim For Your Life!
Peirsol’s latest project is a 21-day hike along the John Muir Trail to raise money for the non-profit We Are Ocean. His adventure will culminate in a climb of Mount Whitney, the highest summit in the continental United States, with an elevation of 14,505 feet.
We Are Ocean is an “adventure-based, ocean-based non-profit where we take young survivors on adventures and we teach them to live life post-treatment,” says founder Jack Shimko. A cancer survivor and ocean lover himself, he believes in healing through adventure. We Are Ocean takes survivors on 2- or 5-day ocean-based adventures, all expenses paid. In order to fund this mission they encourage athletes to put together a fundraising adventure -of their choosing- to build awareness and raise money.
Peirsol’s goal is to raise $2500 for We Are Ocean. His fundraising page is here. Whether or not people are in a position donate to his cause, he would appreciate them getting the word out via Twitter and Facebook.
When is Aaron doing this? I maybe able to help, also where do we donate money?
I am so proud of you for what you are doing, the dedication what a difference you are making in a persons life!
