Breaststroking sensation Adam Peaty from Great Britain did his part for his country’s gold medal haul at these world championships, claiming the top prize in both of his individual events. As such, Peaty became the first male swimmer to win both 50m and 100m breaststroke events in a single world championships.
In this interview after his 50m victory, Peaty reminds us that he is just 20 years old and looks forward to gaining the years of experience that his competitors have already racked up. One of those competitors is 27-year old Cameron van der Burgh from South Africa. Peaty says he saw “VDB” during the race and was actually “a bit worried about him” but the Brit relied on his superb technique to gain momentum and carry him to the wall first for the gold.
For his part, van der Burgh’s silver in the 50m breaststroke signified his 5th consecutive world championships medal in the event.
Indeed, since Rebecca Adlington we haven’t seen anyone so British looking.
