On day 1, there was not too much action from the African Continent.
Marwan Ismail broke the Egyptian National record in the men’s 400 freestyle in route to a 24th place finish. Ismail broke Marwan El Kamash‘s record from June of this year, 3:55.18.
Roland Schoeman of South Africa was the top qualifier in prelims with a 23.02. He was only .12 seconds off of his best time. He was 22.90 at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, Italy. In the semi-finals, he finished 10th with a 23.35. He missed the finals by .09 seconds.
Two African swimmers made it into finals was South African, Devon Myles Brown. Brown was fifth in prelims with a time of 3:47.17. He advanced to finals and finished sixth with a time of 3:48.40. World record holder, Cameron Van Der Burgh made it through prelims and finished third in the semi-finals of the men’s 100 breaststroke. He swam a 59.78 to qualify for the finals tomorrow night.
Egypt had threes swims on day one and two of the three were faster than their entry time.
South Africa had 7 races today but only three were better than their entry times.
