Marwan El Kamash is having a fantastic meet in Barcelona. Yesterday, he broke the Egyptian National record in the 400 freestyle and today, he swam a 1:49.33 in the prelims of the 200 freestyle, breaking another Egyptian national record. That time put him 29th in the event. El Kamash now has three individual records, dominating the middle distance freestyle events. He also was a member of two national relay records. El Kamash has a very promising career ahead of him. The 19 year-old trains in the United States at the University of South Carolina.
South African Cameron Van Der Burgh, the current World Record holder in the men’s 100 breaststroke, won the silver medal in the 100 breaststroke. Van Der Burgh was a half second off of his record time from London last summer of 58.46. Today he touched the wall in 58.97, 0.18 seconds behind the Gold medalist, Christian Sprenger.
Cameron Van Der Burgh does not have a super heavy schedule, so he should do really well the rest of the meet. He has the 50 breaststroke and the 4×100 medley relay. He looked great at the 50 of his 200 today. He was the first to the wall at the 50 in 26.83. That should translate really well to his 50 breaststroke.
Really happy to see Van Den Burgh get silver, most on swimswam seemed to have written him off for these champs. My money is on him for the 50m.
