In addition to 17-year-old Erika Fairweather producing a new national age record tonight at the New Zealand National Championships, World Championships bronze medalist Lewis Clareburt did some damage in one of his events as well.
The Capital Club swimmer already made noise in the 400m IM, posting the #2 time in the world this season with a new national mark of 4:09.78. But the 21-year-old wasn’t done, taking on the lead-off role on the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
Checking with a big-time 48.96 result, Clareburt not only posted a new lifetime best in the 100m freestyle, but he also cracked the New Zealand national record in the process. The previous mark was held by Daniel Hunter in 49.11, meaning Clareburt just became the first kiwi to ever get under the 49-second threshold in the 100m freestyle.
Spilts for Clareburt’s 48.96 included 23.80/25.16 to make New Zealand history. Not too shabby for a 4:09 400 IMer.
idea – are swimmers more versatile these days or years ago swimmers just swam their prime stroke and never dabbled with other strokes as they where suppose to be specialist…. Altho Jani Sievinen was master all strokes…..

200fr record will come soon enough too – He has to be capable of going under 1.47.
His 200 IM ought to be pretty good too. Extrapolate from a 48.96 and 4:09 and you should end up with at least a 1:57.
Wasn’t there a butterflier around 2008/2009 in the Olympic and WC finals from NZ? I forgot what his name was
Swanepoel & Burmester were both good ‘flyers from NZ around that time. Not sure about finals though. The latter probably more likely of the two.
Burmester was the guy in the 200 fly final who went out with Phelps and got pianoed the last 25
He looked great the first 125 then BOOM
If I remember it was the whole orchestra.
Burmester was 4th at the 2008 olympics with 1:54.35. He also won gold in men’s 200 fly at the 2008 short-course world championships.
I don’t know about the rest of y’all but I love watching those versatile swimmers who can hop up and do a plethora of events.
