AgonSwim Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming – 2/3/2016

Here are our Weekly Wonders for the weekend of January 29-31, 2016:

Olivia Frantum, 11, Central Iowa Aquatics: 1000y free (11:36.26) – Frantum won the girls 11-12 200/500/1000 freestyle events at the CIA Winter Blues Buster in Johnston, Iowa by 2.3, 20, and 16 seconds, respectively. Frantum left the meet with new PBs in the 50/100/200/500/1000 free and 50/100/200 back.

Cailey Grunhard, 17, Kansas City Swim Academy: 100y back (55.50) – At the Tiger Invitational hosted by Columbia Swim Club Tigersharks at the Mizzou Aquatic Center, Grunhard was the lone age-grouper in a sea of Mizzou Tigers when she placed second in the women’s 100 back with a 55.50, tying her lifetime best. Grunhard also earned PBs in the 50/200 free.

Ethan Neff, 13, Lake Erie Silver Dolphins: 200y back (2:03.38) – Neff placed second in the men’s open 200 back at the STAR Winter Challenge, with a nearly 5-second drop from his seed time. He was also runner-up in the 100 and 50 distances, also with best times. In addition to the backstrokes, Neff went best times in the 50/100 free and 100 IM.

Aiden Hayes, 12, Sooner Swim Club: 100y fly (56.00) – Hayes had a stellar weekend at the AESC Winter Ice Breaker at the Mitch Park YMCA. Swimming in the open division against college athletes, Hayes finished tenth in the men’s 100 fly with a best time. All in all, he took home seven new PBs from the meet: 50/100 free, 50 breast, 50/100 fly, and 200/400 IM.

Athena Ye, 14, Kishwaukee YMCA Dekalb County: 100y fly (57.65) – Ye won the girls’ 14-and-under 50/100/200 free, 100/200 back, 100 breast, 100/200 fly, and 200/400 IM at the DCST Winter Classic. She earned the high point award for 13-and-over, and scored new PBs in the 200 free, 100 breast, 200 fly, and 400 IM.

Haily Payne, 12, Velocity Swimming: 100y fly (59.83) – Swimming at the Winter Open hosted by Tri-City Channel Cats at the Central Washington University Aquatic Center, Payne won the girls’ 11-12 50/200 free, 100 back, 100/200 breast, 50/100/200 fly, and 200/400 IM, setting meet records in all but the 200 free, 200 breast and 400 IM. She earned best times in the 50/200 free, 100 breast, 50 fly, and 400 IM.

Beau Bengston, 12, Tiftarea Tidal Wave: 200y fly (2:11.08) – Bengston improved over 7 seconds in the 200 fly at the Southeast Divisional Championships at Chatham County Aquatic Center in Savannah, Georgia. He also had big drops in the 50 free (.7 seconds), 200 back (3.6), 100 IM (3), and 200 IM (8).

Thomas Diaz, 14, Occoquan Swimming: 200y IM (1:56.52) – At the USA Swimming IM Xtreme Games-NE held at University of Maryland, Diaz finished third in the Boys 14 Year Olds Sextathlon. He went best times in all six events: 500 free (4.8-second improvement), 200 back (3 seconds), 200 breast (3.8), 200 fly (.5), 200 IM (1.8), and 400 IM (6.5).
