We are starting to see some nice early-season swims going on all over the country. This past weekend gave lots of opportunities for fast racing: there were high school invitationals, senior meets, intrasquad meets, and age group meets. See who made AgonSwim’s list of Weekly Wonders for the weekend of September 28-26, 2014:
Cody Cline, 16, Unattached (Wahoo’s of Wellington): 50y free (20.99) – First time under 21 seconds, first national cut (Winter Juniors) in the SCY version of the event. Swimming for Wellington High School, Cline won both the 50 free and 100 free at the FSPA High School Invitational Swimming & Diving Meet at the Sailfish Splash Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart, Florida. Cline posted the fastest 50 free in the nation among age-groupers this week.
Lauren Beckish, 14, Team Greenville: 100y free (52.40) – Beckish dropped an astounding 4.2 seconds off her best time and won the girls 100 free at Team Greenville’s “Blue Green Intersquad Meet” at Westside Aquatic Complex. Even better, she was 7.2 seconds faster than she had been at the same meet last year.
Morgan Tankersley, 15, Unattached (Greater Tampa Swimming Association): 500y free (4:53.11) – Tankersley represented Plant High School at the FSPA High School Invitational, where she won the 50 free and finished second in the 500. Her 500 time was a PB by 6.6 seconds, and a full 13.5 seconds faster than in September 2013.
Jackson Mussler, 11, Lakeside Swim Team: 100y back (1:00.92) – Eight events, eight personal bests: Mussler was on fire at the Nashville Aquatic Club Duel in the Pool held at Centennial SportsPlex. Mussler won the boys 11-12 100 back, dropping 5.7 seconds. At the same meet last year, Mussler went 1:12.68!
Elizabeth Amato-Hanner, 16, 200y back (2:02.85) – Amato-Hanner won the girls 15 & Older 100y and 200y back at the Aquatic Club of Elkhorn River Races in Elkhorn, Nebraska. She was only .7 off her personal best in the 200, and ahead of her pace from this time last year.
Gabe Machado, 11, Boise YMCA Swim Team: 200y back (2:19.65) – Machado knocked 8.3 seconds off his best 200 back time at the Caitlin Vinsonhaler Memorial Achievement Meet at the West YMCA/Boise City Aquatic Center. He also took home a new personal best in the 100 fly.
Tenny Chong, 15, Rapids Swim Club: 100y breast (1:00.55) – Chong won the 100 and 200 breast and 200 back at the Team Santa Monica ‘BRW’ Short Course Age Group Meet. He went best times in both breaststroke distances, as well as in the 100 back and 100 fly.
Marian Frick, 12, Ad Astra Area Aquatics: 100y breast (1:10.36) – At the Club North Adidas Sprint Classic in Gladstone, Missouri, Frick dropped 3 and won the girls 11-12 breast by ten seconds. She also won a tightly-contested 100 IM with a new PB. Lastly, she went a best time in the 50 free to cap off a perfect weekend.
Gian Garcia, 16, Unattached (Bolles School Sharks): 100y fly (49.85) – Representing Creekside High School at the FSPA High School Invitational, Garcia won the 100 fly and finished second in the 100 breast. It was his first time under 50 seconds in the fly, and his first national (Winter Juniors) cut in SCY. He improved his seed time by 1.6 seconds and was nearly 3 seconds faster than last September.
Lauren Mayo, 12, Aquatic Club of Elkhorn: 200y fly (2:17.59) – Mayo won the girls 11-12 200 fly at the ACE River Races, dropping 2.4 seconds off her seed time. She was more than 14 seconds faster than she’d been at the same meet last year. Mayo finished the weekend with new PBs in the 200 back, 50 breast, 50/100/200 fly, and 200/400 IM.
Ethan Lewczyk, 12, North Bay Aquatics: 200y IM (2:13.42) – Lewczyk improved his PB by 6.5 seconds in the men’s open 200 IM at the Marin Pirates Senior Open. He went home from the meet with new times in the 50/100/200 free, 100/200 back, and 100/200 fly in addition to the 200 IM.
Jackson Cunningham, 14, Boise YMCA Swim Team: 200y IM (2:02.86) – Cunningham dropped nearly 5 seconds and set a Snake River Swimming LSC record for boys 13-14 200 IM at the Caitlin Vinsonhaler Memorial Achievement Meet. Cunningham also picked up new PBs in the 500 free and 200 back.
