AgonSwim Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming – 6/24/2015

Sometimes we have to be patient while we wait for all the results from a particular weekend to get posted. But there were a lot of great meets all over the country this past weekend that were worth waiting for. So here they are, the AgonSwim Weekly Wonders for the weekend of June 19-21, 2015:

Andrew Trepanier, 14, South Metro Storm: 50m free (24.31) – Trepanier picked up his first-ever long course national cut at the Swim Pink Summer Invitational hosted by Lane Four Aquatics at University of Iowa Recreation Center. Trepanier won the boys 14-and-under 50 free, 100 free, and 100 fly. He registered best times in both freestyles, coming within .19 of Michael Andrew’s meet record in the 100.

Mark McGlaughlin, 17, Iowa Flyers Swim Club: 100m free (50.45) – Also swimming at Swim Pink Invitational, McGlaughlin punched his ticket to 2016 Olympic Trials for the first time, getting cuts in both the 50 and 100 free. McGlaughlin also went best times in the 200 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM.

Sean Slusiewicz, 13, Irvine Novaquatics: 200m free (2:02.08) – Slusiewicz improved his seed time by 1.8 seconds and was more than 11 seconds faster than a year ago when he finished second (by .13) in the boys 13-14 200 free at Southern California Swimming’s June Age Group Championships hosted by NOVA. Slusiewicz picked up new times in the 50/100/400 free and 200 IM as well.

William Swartwout, 12, Long Island Express: 400m free (4:29.26) – Swimming at the LIE June Jamboree, Swartwout dropped 16.6 seconds in the 400 free; first he took 13.8 off his seed time and finished 13th in the boys open event, then he time-trialed it the next day and dropped another 2.8 seconds. Swartwout went 10-for-12 in personal bests, including 50/100/400 free, 50 back, 50/100 breast, 50/100/200 fly, and 200 IM.

Cody Bekemeyer, 18, SwimAtlanta: 1500m free (15:44.70) – Bekemeyer had an impressive fourth-place finish in a stacked 1500 free field at the TNAQ June Invitational. He dropped 7.3 seconds and earned his first Olympic Trials cut in the event. He can add that to the 400 free and 400 IM standards he already had. Bekemeyer finished the weekend with new times in the 200 free and 200 IM.

Aria Bernal, 14, Katy Aquatic Team For Youth: 100m back (1:04.14) – Bernal had a strong showing at the Alamo Area Aquatic Association Texas Senior Circuit Long Course Meet, placing second in the women’s 100 back. She swam the distance three times, including as leadoff leg for KATY’s 400 medley relay, and was 7/10 better than her seed each time. Bernal also went PBs in the 100 free, 50 back, and 200 IM.

Astrid Dirkzwager, 13, Wichita Swim Club: 100m back (1:07.32) – Dirkzwager won the girls 13-14 100 back at the Lincoln Select Swimming Capital City Classic in Lincoln, Nebraska. She bettered her seed time, which was only 3 weeks old, by 2.5 seconds and was 4.2 seconds faster than a year ago. Dirkzwager came away with new times in the 200/400 free, 50/100/200 back, 100/200 fly, and 200 IM.

Ben Neff, 14, Lancaster YMCA Swim Team: 200m back (2:12.52) – Competing at the Cincinnati Marlins TYR Sport Summer Classic, Neff won the boys 13-14 200 back by nearly 8 seconds, with a lifetime-best by 3 seconds. He also won the 50/100/200 free, 100 back, and 100 fly, and achieved PBs in the 50/100/200 free, 100/200 back, 100 fly, and 200 IM.

Liam Bell, 14, Dynamo Swim Club: 100m breast (1:04.91) – Bell dropped 3 seconds in prelims and another 1.6 in finals to finish 3rd in the men’s open 100 breast at TNAQ June Invitational. He also made the A final in the 200 breast. The weekend produced new personal bests for Bell in the 50/100/200 free, 100 back, 100/200 breast, 100 fly, and 200/400 IM.

Ashley McCauley, 14, Marlins of Raleigh: 200m breast (2:33.95) – At The Woodlands Swim Team Senior Invitational Meet, McCauley improved her personal best by a second, and was more than 7 seconds faster than a year ago in the 200 breast. She also went PBs in the 400 free, 200 back, and 200 IM.

Ricky Mihm, 13, Allegheny North Swim Club: 100m fly (1:00.80) – Mihm went ten-for-ten with best times at the Robert F. Busbey Invitational hosted by Lake Erie Silver Dolphins at Cleveland State University. Runner-up in the 100/200 butterfly events, he won the 200/400 free and 200/400 IM.

Will Macmillan, 17, North Carolina Aquatic Club: 200m fly (2:01.69) – Macmillan achieved his first 2016 Olympic Trials cut when he went a best time and won the C final of the men’s 200 fly at Arena Pro Swim Series at Santa Clara. Macmillan went back to North Carolina with new times in the 100/200 free and 200 back in addition to the 200 fly.

Adam Fusti-Molnar, 12, Charger Aquatics: 200m IM (2:25.56) – Swimming at the Vipers of Albuquerque Summer Open, Fusti-Molnar improved his 200 IM seed time by nearly 5 seconds and was 22 seconds faster than he’d been a year ago. He finished the weekend with new PBs in the 200/400 free, 100/200 breast, 100 fly, and 200 IM.

Here are Jace Brown’s, from Rockwall.Aquatic.Center of Exellence, times at the 2015 LC Texas Age Group Championships. Jace is 14 years of age. He won the High Point award at this meet winning 5 out of 7 events getting 2nd and 3rd in the other two.

200 free: 1:58.74
100 back: 1:01.25
200 back: 2:11.89
100 fly: 57.98
200 fly: 2:10.38

Logan Shiller (15) Houston Swim Club narrowly missed
trials in the 100 and 200 free at the Texas Senior Circuit
meet going 56.62 and 202.40. Missed by .13 and .01 respectively.
